Meet Christian Knipps of Denver

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christian Knipps.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
When I had originally purchased my first camera, I had absolutely no idea what my goal truly was.
I was really struggling at the time, and quite frankly I was at one of the lowest points of my life.
I couldn’t allow myself to continue to self destruct, and I knew I had one of two options. Succumb to my self destructive tendencies, or find an outlet.

There was a night where things were really bad, and none of my typical remedies seemed to be working. I looked over at the brand new camera I had purchased over 6 months prior, and said to myself, “F*** it. I have nothing to lose.”
I ripped open the box, and hopped on the train downtown.
The rest is history.

As time progressed, I began learning more and more, and had taught myself everything there was to know about photography. I began developing my own style relatively quickly, and that motivated me even more. It evolved from still photos, to video, and everything else in between.

I am forever thankful for the peace that this craft has granted me, and it is something I will cherish for the rest of my life.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
One of my biggest struggles was realizing that my favorite things to shoot were things I couldn’t necessarily “make a living from.”

Very soon after my journey began, I realized that I loved being alone in a dark alleyway somewhere. And those are places not many of us choose to frequent.

But it’s not about “making a living.” It’s about the serenity I feel when I’m out and about in a new city, and the freedom it brings me.
When anyone chooses to support my work by purchasing a custom print, sharing my work, or even liking the photos that I’m posting, it is the single greatest feeling in the world.
And that, in my humble opinion, is worth its weight in gold.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I believe I am more known for my street photography.

I have developed a unique style with street photography that captures the dirtier, grungier sides of cities that most people ignore. I try to capture beauty in the most unsuspecting places.

My style is a unique mixture of dark, moody, yet vibrant. And my goal with each photo is to invoke a feeling inside of my audience, whether that feeling is happy, sad, uncomfortable, and everything in between.

How do you think about luck?
I owe my entire journey to luck. If it wasn’t for that weird gut feeling I had to pick up a camera on a whim and just go for it, I would have never had any idea that I would thrive the way I did.
And for that, I am forever thankful.
