Meet Colin Bovberg of Colorado Springs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Colin Bovberg

Hi Colin, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Hello! We are Ozonic! “Ozonic” is not only the name of our band, but also the combination of genres that each of us grew up with, such as pop punk, classical, electronica, and several others that culminates in a sound that’s truly unique. The project began as an idea that our lead vocalist Colin Bovberg had in 2015. Colin was the man behind the solo project known as The Epic Weatherman, performing gigs and releasing music music from 2008 to 2016. In 2015 he made the decision to collaborate with other musicians to expand the vision, and elevate The Epic Weatherman to a new level. Current Ozonic members, Sean Kurchinski, Timothy Cravens, and Keith Bovberg were all brought on board, and the new project was named Weathervein. Between 2015-2016, we performed re-imaginings of tracks by The Epic Weatherman, as well as our own original music.

During this time, we realized that the music we had started creating began to differ significantly from The Epic Weatherman songs. We ended up re-naming the group to Ozonic, in order to better convey the newer sound we were creating. We then brought on our current drummer, Nathaniel Knitter. Over the last several years, we’ve been releasing and writing new music, as well as performing all over Colorado. Our current goal is to try and expand our audience and share our music with as many people as possible!

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
As much as we would like to say it’s been a smooth road, being in a band has absolutely come with it’s own challenges. One of the first hurdles has been the ability to work around the schedules of five human beings with five different lives. Finding the time to practice, schedule shows, and work on content has been very difficult at times and something that we continue face.

On that note, we are the epitome of a D.I.Y. band. From day one, we’ve done everything it takes to run the band. We book our own shows, manage finances, create merchandise, practice twice a week, create content, manage our social media accounts, and list goes on and on.

We should also mention navigating the COVID pandemic. 2020 was a rough time for our band and the music industry in general. Being unable to play shows and practice regularly was a creatively and emotionally draining experience for all of us. We eventually were able to play some virtual shows online, but nothing beats playing to crowds face to face.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Something that sets us apart from other bands is just how unique our sound is. We consistently have people come up to us after shows and tell us that we don’t sound like anything they’ve ever heard. We are very proud that no two of our songs really sound alike, but somehow end up feeling cohesive. Because of this, there ends up being a little something for everyone at our shows! Another thing that we think sets us apart from other bands is just how theatrical and eccentric our live shows are. Our lead vocalist, Colin, has been compared to the likes of Freddie Mercury and David Bowie in terms of the glamour and high energy he brings to the shows. He is an absolutely amazing frontman, and always leaves the crowd wanting more.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
In our experience, you always find mentors when you least expect to. We all have experiences with finding people who have been pivotal in our musical and professional development on a complete whim. Our best advice is to put yourself out there and connect with like minded people. You never know what amazing friends and opportunities can come out of that.
