Today we’d like to introduce you to Connaitre Tillman.
Hi Connaitre, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started my business in 2019-2020 in Atlanta when I was working as a nanny, I realized I had a passion for working with new mothers and babies. So I wanted to make an impact because I also heard and realized that the maternal death rate for black women were really high due to a lack of support and education.
After the pandemic hit everything came to a halt and couldn’t find any work. I ended up going back home to Dallas, TX for a little while. I wanted so much more, so I prayed and talked to God and out of all places he brought me to Denver, CO. I came here by faith and trusting God knowing that I didn’t have any close family and friends here. But I also understood that this journey wasn’t just about me but it was about the impact of the people I would encounter and help out.
I started working as a screener at Denver Health and while I was working there I saw signs around the clinics I worked at. They were talking about the midwives and I also saw the Denver Health Doula program’s Facebook page, which I became really interested and joined.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Some challenges that I have is that people don’t have the education of what a Doula is especially in underserved communities. Even while volunteering at hospitals some mothers didn’t know what a Doula was and they were already in labor. I realized this especially as I started my current job at WIC and there’s a lot of work to be done.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
