Today we’d like to introduce you to Courtney Rodriguez.
Hi Courtney, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I came to postpartum doula work after the birth of my oldest son in 2007. My own postpartum experience was difficult and lonely, and I wanted to work with other families to help them enjoy this special time after the birth of a new family member. I was working in corporate catering at a hotel downtown when he was born. The work/life balance was not great, so I was also in search of a career where I could have flexible hours to be home with my children as they grew up. I completed my certifications in 2013 (after I had my 3rd baby) and have been working as a doula ever since!
As I tell families, this is my chosen career. It’s not a hobby. I stay up to date on research and all of my certifications in order to provide families the best possible care.
In my spare time I love spending time with my family outside in our beautiful state of Colorado, and visiting National Parks (we have been to 21 so far)! I also love to cook, bake sourdough, and read.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I struggle with the “business” side of things – I am terrible at asking for google reviews and don’t even ask me to make an instagram reel!
In my early days, I also really struggled with setting healthy boundaries with families. This career can be so variable from client to client, and from day to day, so it’s hard to determine what is actually in my “job description” sometimes. I have had to learn that it is ok to say no!
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Nurture My Nest, LLC?
I am a postpartum doula, lactation educator, and infant sleep specialist. I am the owner of my business and the sole employee. There is a high turnover in the doula world, so the fact that I have been doing this for 13 years makes mine one of the most established doula practices in the Denver area. My additional certifications in sleep and lactation help me to really provide families with well rounded support. Most of my clients come to me through word of mouth – either from other doulas or past clients. I am proud of the relationships that I have built and the reputation that I uphold.
A postpartum doula visit is typically 4-6 hours and can look different on any given day and with each family. Typically, I start the visit off by checking in with the parents to see how things are going – we talk about breastfeeding, sleep, newborn care, and answer any questions that they might have. From there, my goal is to leave them in a better place than I found them. This could mean preparing a meal, holding baby so parents can nap or shower, giving baby a bath together, taking the dog for a walk, processing their birth story, grabbing groceries, hanging out with older siblings, and so much more!
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I was the typical eldest daughter – quiet, good in school, and a people pleaser. I was born in Grand Junction, CO, which was really a small town back then. We moved to the Denver area when I was 10 and it was very different. It’s been fun raising my kids in the same place I grew up! I was always into ballet but I was never very good at it! But I do think it helped me with discipline and perseverance. I graduated from college at CU Boulder and moved to New York City, thinking that I wanted a corporate career. I didn’t last long in the world of corporate sales and catering, and once I had my son I really wanted to be home with him (and future children) while still doing meaningful work. Thus, my doula career was born!
