Today we’d like to introduce you to Danielle Edwards.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’ve loved photography for as long as I can remember. As a child, I used my allowance money to buy disposable cameras from Walgreens so that I could take photos of me and my friends. I couldn’t wait to get the photos developed to see what I had been able to capture from a split second in time. I took photography classes in high school, both digital and film, and finally purchased my first DSLR camera in 2011.
Since then, I’ve had the pleasure of capturing thousands of photos from across the world. I love nothing more than documenting “in-between” moments, when people are not posed or thinking about the fact that their photo is being taken. I really feel like that is when we are our most authentic selves. While I have 10+ years of photography experience, I only recently launched Danielle Edwards Photography, LLC in April of 2022 to formalize my photography business.
In my full-time work, I am a third-year law student at the University of Colorado, Boulder. I also hold a MSc in Organizational and Social Psychology from the London School of Economics and a BA in Communication from the University of Colorado.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely not! I think the most challenging part of launching a small business today is learning how to market your business across so many different social media and other web-based platforms. You are required to not only have the skills necessary for the service you are providing, but you also have to become a full-time content creator. It has been a big learning curve, but I am really enjoying it so far.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in portrait photography – specifically family, maternity, senior, boudoir, and couples photography. I aim to make all of my clients feel comfortable and beautiful in their sessions. I have had so many clients be nervous and apprehensive about having their photos taken, but that is completely normal! With the right photographer, portraits should feel relaxed and fun.
I also work to provide top-tier service at an affordable price point. Portrait photography today can be incredibly expensive, and I think that can leave individuals without many options for premium service. For example, my headshot rates start at $50 for a 15-minute session with a minimum of three edited photos. Additionally, all of my packages include full printing rights, meaning you can print as many of the photos as you want, wherever you want, without any additional cost to you.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
I would say, just start! You have to begin somewhere.
The photography market can seem really saturated, and for a long time, I wondered if I should start my company at all. There are so many amazing photographers out there, but if you have a passion and it truly brings you joy, you shouldn’t let that stop you from creating your own business and style.
What is most helpful for me is to stop comparing myself and where I am at in my journey to other photographers who are years ahead of me. As long as I am learning and growing, I am happy!
