Meet David Vinezeano of On Vinyl Tonight

Today we’d like to introduce you to David Vinezeano.

Hi David, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
On Vinyl Tonight started off with a residency of sorts at the old Denver Bicycle Cafe on 17th street, every Wednesday night we’d get together and share music, take turns spinning our favorite vinyl records for each other. As more people became interested, we started adding dj’s to our ranks and figured we could take our genre hopping programming style on the road, before we knew it we were spinning at apartment building pool parties and small street fairs. Not bad for a crew of people who see our selves as more of a book club than entertainment outfit.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
We’ve been growing organically, so the roads been long and smooth, but like other performers, Covid put the kibosh on our 2020 plans. Luckily our venue parters have stuck with us, giving us more dates in 2021 than we knew what to do with.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
We allow our dj’s to operate with very few parameters, a lot of emphasis is placed on openness and creative control. Dj’s can spin what they want, when the want, this freedom allows us to explore music that speaks to us, hopefully this inspires anyone in attendance to ask questions about the artists we play and possibly expand their musical appetite for genre’s they’d normally not consider. This open format keeps us from being boxed in a corner, we get to grow any way we want, even if that means running down a garage rock rabbit hole from the 1960’s one week and then geeking out hard on Sade the next. Our format allows anyone in attendance to share the experience with us, we let anyone make a request from our record bin and we play it, our turntables are open to everyone looking to learn more about spinning records.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
Can’t really say that we’ve been lucky, buying thousands of records and professional equipment didn’t just happen accidentally. We have a strong interests in music, that infectiousness rubs off on everyone we encounter.
