Today we’d like to introduce you to Devon Hamilton.
Hi Devon, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I grew up in a smaller town in Wisconsin, and my mom was a hairstylist for my entire childhood into my adulthood. We decided to visit Colorado Springs in January of 2018 and fell in love. We decided to move to Colorado within 2-3 years. 6 weeks after I returned home from our vacation, I was in a head-on collision on the highway that left me with a broken back in several places.
I was in a halo brace for 3 months and I lost almost all of my independence during that time. I had to re-learn how to walk and do the other daily activities I was so used to doing. One of the only things I could do during my recovery was sit and do my makeup. I was spending hours practicing and using it to help heal a lot of the mental battles I was facing. Once I came out of my back brace, I was faced with the question of what to do next. I decided to enroll in Esthetician school, go and get my license, and then pack up my things and move.
About 7 months later, I moved to Colorado. I met quite a few new people and started to become interested in doing hair. I went to school for 5 months and got my hairstyling license. I worked in a salon for about 2 years and decided to open my studio & keep furthering my career. I have been in my studio for 6 months now & it has been a dream come true.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely not, but that’s where we grow the most. After my car accident, I wasn’t sure what direction my life was going to head into.
I didn’t have an apartment in Colorado until the day I left Wisconsin which was scary, but it worked out! Going from a salon into a studio was a big jump, but I knew I was capable of making it happen.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Sun & Moon Studio is a private hair studio in Colorado Springs.
I specialize in lived-in color, and working with long hair. My studio is a safe place & my ultimate goal is to make someone feel good about themselves, even if it’s just for a few hours in my chair.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
I like networking with people who share similar goals & values when it comes to business.
I have met some great people in the industry & love being able to share ideas! Social media is a great tool for networking too.
