Today we’d like to introduce you to Devon Miller.
Devon, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I grew up in Montana and Colorado but didn’t fall in love with photography until I moved to San Francisco 15 years ago. At first, I was in love with the deeper connection it gave me to nature, I was surrounded by so much opportunity to capture the natural beauty around me and I took full advantage. I later fell into a fascination of people and portraits and the dynamics of watching the human interaction with nature. This is when I developed my passion for fine art portraiture.
As my art grew, I realized I was deeply connected to the divine feminine aspect of my art and I started photographing boudoir. At the time I worked in a fancy hotel in downtown San Francisco and was able to get cheap room rates and my friends would all come model for me. This is when I fell madly in love with the rush of energy that came from making someone feel empowered in their chosen skin.
At this point in my career, I have seen so many people blossom in front of my lens and for that, I am truly grateful. There is something about photography that has the ability to go beyond skin deep. There is an energy to every image that gives a little peek into each person’s identity and how they connect with themselves, each time it is unique and special.
I am so grateful to be able to facilitate these experiences. I recently relocated back to Denver to be closer to family, and have started an Empowerment photography business.
Devon Brooke Photography specializes in fine art boudoir and maternity. I am also available for love stories, transitions, accomplishments, or any reason you are feeling the need to celebrate who you are!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Not at all! Ha Ha if anyone thinks being an artist in this world is easy, they are gravely mistaken. Photography has always been a highly competitive field and also a very expensive one to get started in.
I worked for Years in the restaurant and hotel industry to supplement my income and then did contract work on the side.
I went through several life transitions along the way including trying to build business during a pandemic in a new city.
There are learning curves thrown at you every step of the way and you are responsible for every detail.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in Empowerment photography. Translated as anything that makes the client feel like their highest selves. This ranges from fine art boudoir and maternity, healers and retreats, to any big transition or moment in the human experience. Most people think that times of celebration should only come at high points in your life or when you feel like you’re at your personal best, but I believe that we should constantly be celebrating ourselves right where we are at. Some of my most beautiful images were made in a time of uncertainty and vulnerability. The whole point of a photoshoot with me is to make you feel like your best self no matter where you are at on your journey. For my fine art photoshoots, I have a wardrobe available that consists of vintage couture dresses and accessories.
I am body positive and inclusive to all.
I offer options for ethereal magical shoots such as mermaid tails and fine art composite editing.
I have 15 years of experience in the field
What do you think about happiness?
Connection! I always know when I start to sink low that I have either become disconnected from community or disconnected from nature. Growing up in Montana without electricity or plumbing I was encompassed in the world of nature at a very young age and have always shared a deep connection to natural spaces or what drives as humans to either connect or disconnect from these spaces. Traveling! Experiencing a new place and culture, or better yet being hired to capture a new place with a client always makes me happy. I Love adventure and the amazing effect travel has on empathy and human connection.
Food! Living in San Francisco and working in restaurants for as many years as I did made me a bit of a foodie, I still can enjoy trashy food but there’s nothing I love more than a beautiful farm-to-table meal. I call it classy/trashy. It’s all about balance.
