Meet E J Carr

Today we’d like to introduce you to E J Carr.

Hi E J, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
I tripped into photography actually. I was an Art student in Pittsburgh, Pa on the verge of graduation when I had to fulfill my credits and all I had available were two courses, Film making, and Photography. Neither of which I wanted to invest in, at the time. I lost out on that and took the photo class and excelled and from there had an internship with the biggest photographer in the city. After experiencing how exciting it all was, I was hooked. After military service back to Penn State U and then to Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara. First gig shooting fashion catalogues in Dallas and Houston and then off to NYC. Based in NYC until 2007 at which point moved to Ireland for 3 years. Worked in Dublin, still serviced clients in NYC, and had time to develop many personal projects living a bit of a slower lifestyle for a bit. Moved back to the states in 2010, Denver Co., and I’m still here. Denver is a much smaller market but growing fast I believe.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Smooth? I’d say not a smooth road but a challenging road. I always find ways to keep creating new work, either with assignments or personal projects. I believe there are struggles no matter which road one might take. An industry such as fashion and editorial portraiture offers extraordinary opportunities and there are rough spots. Many different personalities and egos come into play. Staying in my own lane, as they say, has been hard at times, but always seems to be the least stressful. Keeping my own flag flying, in my own way has been my road.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’ve worked in the Fashion Industry, shooting catalogues and editorial and advertising as well as Editorial portraits for the entertainment industry, including the Music business. My work has expanded into the sports/golf world as I now live and work in a market that has less of the Fashion work.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
Hmmmm…, good question. The one I think of every summer is lovely.

I would spend the summer as the community swimming pool with my other friends.

When I would get home, my mother would make me a tomato sandwich. White bread, sliced tomato, mayo, and salt and pepper.

Today I’d have to ask for whole grain.
