Meet Eleanor Williamson

Today, we’d like to introduce you to Eleanor Williamson.

Eleanor Williamson

Hi Eleanor, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I started taking photography as a high school student, and my dad kindly built me a darkroom in my basement so I could practice all the time. I was extremely introverted, so it was a way for me to connect with other students—I was on the yearbook committee, and I just loved finally having a reason to talk to everyone, plus the ability to hide behind my camera when needed!

My career trajectory took me to SKI Magazine, where I worked as the art director for 15 years. I went on amazing photoshoots with the most talented photographers, and I watched what they did and soaked it all up. Something about it flipped a switch for me, and I eventually started to think more about photography than I did about design.

I practiced all the time, taking photos of my family at home and then of friends’ families, too. I found so much beauty in capturing moments—an open-mouthed laugh, a playful handhold, a knowing look between a husband and wife—that otherwise would be lost amidst the chaos of life.

I want to give that gift to my clients, to capture the light that shines in each of us, and to collect memories that will become their greatest treasures.

Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Transitioning to a new career was a slow and steady challenge. I was lucky to have some amazing part-time jobs with the support of friends and a husband who encouraged me every step of the way.

I put in long hours, especially during the summer and fall, because it’s a seasonal job, and my family has been very patient. They know I am passionate about this and understand it’s my drive and art.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m best known for shooting people. I think my laid-back and easy-going personality puts people at ease.

I try to be a calming influence at stressful shoots or on big days for clients, like weddings. It allows people to relax in front of my camera and, therefore, look natural and their best. I gravitate towards capturing happy moments. I am a light-hearted photographer, for sure.

What were you like growing up?
I was as shy as shy can be! I kept to myself a lot, but always a few very good friends. I made strong bonds with people and took them very seriously.

I was not necessarily a super creative kid, so this career path surprised everyone! But I had some mentors in my adolescence who saw the spark in me and nurtured it, and I’m so thankful for that.
