Today we’d like to introduce you to Embet Amy Getaneh.
Hi Embet, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I moved to Toronto, Canada from my home country of Ethiopia as a young woman with a dream of just making enough money to survive and possibly get an education. A few years later, I earned a degree in Business Accounting with the hope of working for an established company and earning a decent living. I moved to the Denver metro Area and got a job for a major airline as a Business Accounting Specialist.
I was content and could have never imagined being a business owner in the future. Denver Roses was birthed as an extension of a passion service project of mine. For many years, I would deliver flower bouquets for women in my community – from single mothers to widows to mothers to elderly women – as an act of service. I loved seeing how even a simple bouquet could bring so much joy to someone.
As a lover of rose bouquets myself, I noticed that advancers in floristry had allowed for roses to be preserved for a year or more. However, there was a gap in this exciting niche in the floristry industry here in Denver. I went to work – researching, searching for vendors, and budgeting. Most of these initial steps felt like I was dreaming of something beyond what that young immigrant girl came here for – stability and a modest living.
However, as I continued researching, I realized that I had what it took to launch a business for the Denver community and beyond – the business knack, the love for the art, and the understanding of the customer.
Denver Roses was born. I plan on continuing my service project via Denver Roses by donating ten percent of the profits from each sale to a charity in Ethiopia that services widows and orphans. The heart of Denver Roses is love. We plan on sharing love through our work and our impact.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The biggest challenge, thus far, has been growing the courage to get started! Starting a business takes a tremendous amount of courage.
However, once you get started, you are on a roll. So much of the work is learning by practice. I’m up for the challenges and having a lot of fun.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I’m surprised by where I am today. I believe the stereotype of small business owners is that they have always been presented as leaders. In some ways, I have always had great intuition and waviness but I don’t see the present as loud, boisterous, or CEO-like. I lead with love in all of the areas of my life.
Love is not always loud. It may look soft, perhaps even fragile – much like roses. However, much like Denver Rose’s bouquets, love can have a long-lasting impact. I don’t fit the stereotype of a boss, and I’m okay with that. I’d rather, through my work and my communication with my customers, have a positive lasting impact.
