Today we’d like to introduce you to FaT TrAk.
Hi FaT , we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I always new I wanted to be a music producer making beats like Dr Dre ever since I saw my first pro sound magazine in 7th grade. My best friends along with my Twin Brother were talking about what we wanted to do after college and I’ve always been into the beats of the music. My friend Mike was getting his first pair of turntables to dj vinyl at parties and he had a pro sound magazine. Once I looked through that I saw the first beat machine I wanted. We had a single mom so that price at the time was out of the question. Years later I still had that drive to purchase one and started making beats around 2002. Today I have 11 projects along with one on the way as we speak this month named after my late and last pup Jazmyn. My first project The Meditations of Marcus Arrilius gave me recognition around the state and my youtube presence gave me recognition around the world and I’m thankful for that.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road but I am very thankful for every opportunity and every artist or inspiration to create daily. The Lord has definitely blessed me to be able to teach music production to students around Colorado as my day job and for that I am very grateful. Some struggles Marcus passed before we could finish off the last five tracks on the Meditations album that was a struggle trying to keep everyone especially family and friends up to what both of our vision was. I am thankful his engineer and my best friend Mike was able to get it done as he knew how to get the mix right off the way I was producing and saying “I’d like the snare to ring out” and he’d respond “You mean delay,”and I’d say “yea that!” To start understanding different mixing techniques. Some more struggles would be waiting for artists to finish projects that have been sitting in the vault for many years. An album I’ve produced has been in the vault since 2011 and I had to spread those beats out across different artists projects and another album has been complete beat wise since 2016/17 and another that is produced beat wise since 2019. I understand it takes time to get stuff done but tomorrow isn’t promised to anyone so I’ve decided to keep doing what I need to as far as make instrumental projects that I can control the release date and focus on patience with them and the artist’s time.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m known for making complete albums and my youtube presence. I have 11 projects out and have had the opportunity to study engineering so I can mix my own recordings. I am most happy about The Meditations of Marcus Arrilius album as well as a compilation album I’ve produced recorded and mixed along with the help of my brother Tylaw allowing me to have him be a listener to help me fix the little yet big things that stood out. I am also happy about a collaboration I did with Felix Fast4ward and ILL Se7en on a project titled Earth Seed that’s on band camp at the moment. I guess I’m very happy about them all I can go on for days about each project The way to Heaven & The way to Heaven 2 to help try show people the exact way to get to Heaven Biblically as I used Scriptures as titles. The Good Side of Sorrow a collaboration with my brother Tylaw on majority of the beats if not half me and half him. Collaborating with my Twin Bradlees Band on all guitar playing has been a blessing as well check out Lazy Ears off FaT TrAk’s from the MPC and you can get a jist of the fantastic playing. I’m a beat maker, producer engineer and I also love to cook at each studio session. Ask Ill Se7en, Greybeard and Eighty Spadez they’ll tell you. :0)
I’m very grateful to teach the youth music production in schools across Colorado as well and for my youtube channel growing off of tutorials, beat making videos, my cooking show O taste & See and the Digging with Strangers Series where I ask a stranger to dig for random vinyl and set out to find producers across the world to make a beat off of what the Stranger finds. Make sure to like share and subscribe! I’d appreciate it!
What do you like and dislike about the city?
Best thing I like about our city is there is a lot of talent. We don’t have to move to LA or New York to be dope (nothing wrong with that) however, we have dope music. There are places that host local talent regularly like Bar Red and Beats Bodega respect to them! Least thing I dislike I feel for the most part we always gotta open for headliners. I think if 107.5 and other stations would continuously play our music we would be put on and have bigger artists open for us in our city and vice versa. I stopped listening to radio years ago so maybe I’m out the loop on what other stations outside of 107.5 are here in the city; however, I think that would help build a loyal fan base and help build artists and producers up from the city. Perfect example look at Nelly and St. Louis or Outkast and Atlanta. I have more people around the globe know about me than fans here in the city. Artist’s and producers know but I guess the regular fans don’t. The last thing I like least is other artists that move here feel like we don’t have a sound which we’ve always had a sound. We have many types of sounds because we are close to the West, Midwest, studied the East hip hop wise (it’s where it started) and South so in my personal opinion we are a gumbo pot with our own sound in itself. Thanks for the interview!
