Today we’d like to introduce you to Ferchi Valentin.
Hi Ferchi, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
ever since I was little I would always be doing something with my hands I was always very creative and a hands-on learner, the first time I got my hands on hair was giving my sister bangs and let’s just say mom was not very happy with the haircut I gave my siblings growing up when I was in high school is when I actually played with friends and families hair. I always loved it but I never saw it as a career. During my senior year in 2020, I was stressing out on what was my next chapter, during all that covid hit and made things worse as I’ve always been a more hands-on person and doing online was not something I understood and or liked. Therefore I took a gap year and I went straight into being a semi-truck driver !!! crazy right I still can’t believe I was driving a semi-truck. You might be asking yourself how I got that job, my parents are both semi-truck drivers and it was the only thing I could think of.
But I soon learned it was not for me, I was always looking for something that made me happy, it wasn’t till December 2020 that I went to Mexico, where I attended a hair appointment my mom had with her best friend who owns a salon. Her name is Andrea Ramos. Andrea was the person that motivated me and made me think of being. a hairstylist and she pushed me to visit the salon and see the environment. Long story short I spent most of my break in Andreas salon. Coming back to colorado I looked into schools and saved up all my money so I could start. I chose Paul Mitchell The School of Denver and I started in October 2021, I am now halfway through my program and I love my school I am always looking forward to attending and learning and growing, as my educators are always looking forward on helping me and pushing me to be the best version of my self.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not at all, I had a lot of Familly and friends questioning my career choice, as they were not very supportive. I was told by peers this career was for woman only and that I would not fit in, I was told I would not make enough money, I was reminded I would regret it constantly. This has to do with masculine stigma, but I learned to push through even when I learned I had no support. I have worked hard to accomplish my dream and this is just the beggin, I’ve grown so much and I’ve learned a lot. I’m thankful for all the negatives as they help me value my career and my work.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
My business is slowly growing via Instagram (FerchiValentin). It’s my personal brand where I post my work. Going forward I would love to specialize on Blonding, Extensions, Haircuts, color, and balayages. Like I have said I am still a student, but my work is my pride, and for that reason, I am always looking to grow and expand my knowledge. As in this career, you have to be open-minded and always looking to please your clientele. In Paul Mitchell The School Of Denver is where I have had that opportunity to grow clientele and a portfolio while using the Paul Mitchell line. I encourage you to come down to Paul Mitchell and get a new look! If you guys would like to follow my journey as a hairstylist, go ahead and follow me on Instagram (FerchiValentin).
Any big plans?
I would like to someday own my own salon, that’s in the long run of course. At the moment I am looking forward to graduating and being able to do what I love with is bringing a smile to my clients. My hard work has been paying off as I have a job as an assistant already while being in school. And in my biggest dream id like to be known as a professional hairdresser in the industry. Someday ill be up there but I have a lot of learning to do !!!
