Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Once I turned twenty-eight, I returned to the country of my birth—the United States. Although I had an American passport and birth certificate, I felt more like a stranger than a native. I had grown up in Mexico, so my English was shaky at best, and I worried that I would not be able to communicate with people or succeed in a place that suddenly felt unfamiliar.
Shortly after arriving, my world turned upside down when I went through a divorce. Overnight, I became a single mother to my eight-year-old son. I was determined to provide for him, to offer him the future he deserved. But I had no savings, no safety net, and no real plan. What I did have was a dream: to start my own business.
At first, it seemed impossible. I only had enough money to buy a second-hand machine, which I set up in the corner of my living room. Balancing childcare with work was a constant challenge. I would help my son with homework, make dinner, and then stay up late, working on my machine by the dim glow of a single lamp. Some days, I felt too tired to continue. Other days, I doubted myself: What if I failed?
But slowly, word spread about my work. My English improved with every conversation, every customer I greeted, and every small mistake I turned into a lesson. People admired my determination, and although I still struggled to find the right words sometimes, my sincerity and dedication shone through.
Over time, the orders began to grow, and so did my confidence. I moved my tiny operation from my living room into a modest workshop. New opportunities emerged, and I found the courage to hire a few helpers. Together, we formed a little team that believed in quality, craftsmanship, and perseverance.
Looking back, I realize that my disadvantages were also my strengths. Not speaking English well pushed me to connect with people on a deeper level, relying on kindness and patience. Starting with no money made me resourceful, forcing me to make the most of every single opportunity. And being a single mother reminded me daily of my reason to keep going—my son’s future.
Today, when I see my business thriving, I remember those late nights by the second-hand machine, the fear in my heart, and the unwavering hope that guided me. I learned that sometimes the biggest challenges can give birth to the brightest dreams, and no language barrier or empty wallet can stop a determined spirit from finding its voice.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I have always been a highly creative artist, ever since I was a little girl designing outfits for my dolls. My mother recognized my talent for fashion and my keen eye for detail, which inspired her to encourage me to attend university to study fashion design. Over the years, I have honed my skills to the point where I can create any dress from scratch. I possess comprehensive knowledge of pattern-making, ensuring that every piece is perfectly tailored to each person’s unique measurements. I can also transform and redesign existing garments into one-of-a-kind pieces, combining my expertise in delicate sewing techniques and my ability to embroider by hand. This specialized skill set sets me apart in the world of bridal and high-fashion design, allowing me to bring each client’s vision to life in a truly distinctive way.
