Today we’d like to introduce you to Hailey Trew.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I moved out to Colorado 6 years ago thinking I would be going to CSU for fashion merchandising. After assessing my finances, I decided to drop out before attending the first semester. I didn’t know what I was going to do or how I was going to make it, but I had a strong feeling that I would figure it out. Two years later, after working various jobs in the service industry, I walked into Buffalo Exchange and they told me I should apply for the position that had opened up. They really liked my outfit & the pieces I chose to buy that day. So I applied and I got the job. I only worked there for a short period of time, but in those few weeks I met & became friends with Amber Zimmerman. That was life changing. She is the one who helped me tap into my creative ability. About a year later we started living and creating together in Gold Hill, a small mountain town above Boulder. That is where my modeling career started and where I began building my vintage collection for my brand Witches Brew. It wasn’t until I started working with Emerald Boes that I realized I was also a stylist. I would style my own modeling shoots with my Witches Brew inventory and she noticed I had quite the talent for it. She hired me for my very first styling gig. Since then, I have continued to go for my dreams of being a sustainable stylist and petite model. I have been publish in online zines for both my modeling and styling abilities. I really owe it all to the uplifting women in my life who noticed these talents of mine before I could and who have continually pushed me to keep going. I do pop ups with my Witches Brew Vintage collection once in a while and look forward to getting some of my pieces into brick and mortar spaces this year.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
There have absolutely been some struggles along the way. Most of them come from my own self-doubt and lack of organizational skills. These are things that I am constantly working on. Being your own boss and pursuing a creative career from scratch definitely comes with its hardships, but the wonderful people I’ve met along the way & the feeling of accomplishing my goals outweigh the struggles by a landslide.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in a couple of things. The first is sustainable styling & creative direction for shoots for small businesses, content creators and models/photographers who are building their portfolio. I use my Witches Brew Vintage collection for most of my styling sessions. The shoots I style & creative direct have a high fashion, soft and sensual feel to them.
I also specialize in curating vintage pieces. Every item for Witches Brew is authentic vintage from the 60s to the early 2000s. Sometimes I upcycle pieces to make them a bit more trendy, but I usually like to keep the pieces as is because I don’t think vintage ever goes out of style.
Last but not least, I specialize in petite modeling. As I mentioned earlier, I am only 5’2”, but you would probably never know it given the ways I’ve learned to pose and position myself in photos.
I think what sets me apart from others is that I can do all of these things and that I genuinely love each medium of creativity I have chosen to pursue. Also, that I can take clothing pieces I thrifted for an incredibly cheap price and make an outfit look like it belongs in a high fashion magazine.
Today, I am most proud of my feature in Vogue Italia even though they did not give me proper credit for the photo. The photo was shot by the incredibly talented Kelby Reck, (@k_reckd) I look forward to being featured by them and many more big editorial names in the future.
What were you like growing up?
As a child I adored fashion. When I was a toddler I would play dress up and put on fashion shows for my family frequently. My mom let me pick out my own outfits from a very young age because I would throw a fit if anyone else tried to dress me. When I was about 8 years old, I became obsessed with looking through the Neiman Marcus editorials that would be delivered to my grandparents’ house each season. That is where my high fashion twist on putting together vintage outfits originally stems from. My mom and I would watch America’s next top model together weekly, and I always dreamt of pursuing that path, but was constantly told I would be too short. I am 5’2” and that hasn’t stopped me. It is great to see that the industry is changing and becoming more inclusive.
