Meet James & Rebecca Poppe of Sweet Treats by Poppe

Today we’d like to introduce you to James & Rebecca Poppe. 

Hi James & Rebecca, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
We both went to The Culinary Institute of America, that’s actually where we met and got our degrees in Baking & Pastry Arts. We worked around in Restaurants, Chocolate shops, and Hotels. where we had been honing our skills and getting more comfortable in the industry. Owning our own business has always been a dream, and when COVID hit and everything kind of just stopped, we looked for a way to offer our favorites to anyone and everyone. So, we started at farmers’ markets and want to get our name out there, while also trying to figure out if we could actually do this. We have loved meeting the Denver community from a new angle and we have been very fortunate that people have responded so positively to us and our products! We tend to make things we wish we saw more of while making it our own. 

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
We are firm believers that nothing worth having comes easy, and we constantly remind each other of that during the harder times. Starting a business, in general, is not easy, starting during a pandemic seems insane, luckily with the help of friends and family we have been able to smooth out a few of the bumps. It’s only two of us running the business, all production and storage, building orders, and designing new products is done by us. One issue we’ve had is with packaging, we aren’t large enough to order 10,000 bags so ordering the same packaging throughout the year has been hit and miss. There are always hiccups but thankfully we are there to help each other and while some days may be harder than others it feels good struggling for our business and not someone else. 

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We have a love for all things sweet, and we try to show that thru our treats. We offer Chocolate, Confections, and Baked goods… We aim to focus on the things that we have loved throughout our careers whether they are focused on chocolate, or are more general like breads and pastries. We aim to make delicious food people want to go back in for seconds for. Food makes people happy, and that is one thing we really love about what we do, bringing joy to others thru something we are able to create. We get excited about good food, and we try to bring that to the table when we are making products, we want people to be as excited as we are when we give them their orders. Good food done right, that is what we aim for. 

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Our food quality, without that we are just like anyone else. We hold ourselves to high standards, and we don’t sell anything we wouldn’t be willing to buy ourselves.
