Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Hufford.
Hi Jasmine, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always had an interest in makeup. It started when I was younger with my mom being a makeup artist for Bobbie Brown and Chanel. She taught me tricks and ways to apply makeup and I was hooked. As I got older and before the age of influencers, I watched makeup videos on YouTube to learn more. I was always trying something new. Once I graduated high school and moved out here to Colorado, I started doing friends’ makeup for events and even worked up to creating a small business for doing wedding makeup. Unfortunately, I had to stop for a time. I traveled to Europe for a summer and when I came back, I started nursing school. I knew I had a calling for both helping people and makeup. It was hard to choose. Fast forward a couple years, I’ve now completed nursing school and while I couldn’t be happier with the choices, I’ve made to lead me here, I still have that love for makeup. So, I started from scratch, created Glitterglamco, and have started doing makeup again. My makeup techniques have changed over the years to becoming more glam. I would say I specialize in glam more than natural makeup looks. But I can most certainly do both. The way I apply foundation and skincare, makes it look like a filter but it’s not. I’m currently gaining more certifications as well to offer more services. My ultimate goal is to get into medical aesthetics – injections, lasers, etc to offer brides and anyone else skincare services leading up to their big day. On top of my RN degree, I am getting my certificate for makeup application as well to just show I am more than just self-taught.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It’s not always been easy. With the age of influencers and social media, it’s become in a way almost harder. People want to see everything you’re doing and if you’re not posting daily, then you’re losing followers. It’s also hard to find balance between my current full-time job and social media and time for myself. Any time I do have, I am posting, creating new looks, and trying new ways to reach out to more people and brides. In all honesty, if I hadn’t stopped to go to nursing school, I’d be way ahead of the curve and probably have an established clientele. But the journey I did decide to take, I don’t regret for a moment. I was able to live in Europe, meet my husband, get one of the hardest degrees and find a career I do love, and now reach goals I didn’t think were possible.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a makeup artist. I specialize in more bridal looks. But even more specifically glamorous makeup looks which can apply to anyone wanting to get makeup done for a special event or even themselves, not just brides. Since I can do full-face makeovers, I can also easily tone it down as well. In my opinion, it’s harder to learn how to properly apply full-face glam than natural so it’s easier to tone it back for someone who isn’t used to that style. What sets me apart is where I am heading with my career. Being a nurse, I am very meticulous with my skincare, hygiene, and overall, Heath of my client and myself. I want to make sure someone won’t have a reaction to a product I use and since I have that drive to help an individual, I want to go above and beyond to make someone feel and look their best in the skin they’re in. I myself had bad acne growing up so I also know how to apply and cover up imperfections. And since I am a nurse, down the road I can offer more services as well such as injections like Botox and other skincare services.
What I’m most proud of with myself is getting the courage to start up again with my makeup career. In the age of social media and influencers, it’s easy to stop and think there’s someone better than me, who looks better than me, and compare yourself and belittle yourself. But overcoming the voice in your head and proving it wrong and showing yourself what you’re capable of makes me proud. My little accomplishments along the way like getting big brands to notice you and send you free products to test on clients shows me that I am on the right track and doing the right thing.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
One of my favorite childhood memories is really what brought me to choosing the path in life that I did. My grandmother lived with my family while growing up. She herself was a nurse and did some amazing things in her lifetime. She grew up in the depression era and paved her way to a better life. Leaving home as a teen in rural Wisconsin, saving every penny to send herself to nursing school. I helped take care of her while she lived with us and really got to know who she was. She encouraged me all throughout school to pursue something better for myself and even encouraging me to become a nurse. So, in high school at 16, I started that path and became a certified nurse’s assistant. I was able to share so many memories with her. Once I graduated my own nurses’ training at 26, ten years later, at my pinning ceremony, I used her graduation pin to symbolize my graduation. The pinning ceremony has roots from the 12th century when knights who aided the sick and infirm were given a Maltese cross to wear. Today’s pinning ceremony is closely tied to an award given to legendary nurse Florence Nightingale. So having my grandmother’s pin during my own ceremony, even though she has passed on, made me feel so close to her.
