Today, we’d like to introduce you to Javier Seward (JaSew). Javier was introduced to us by the brilliant and talented Max Venus.
Javier, thank you so much for joining us today. We’d love for you to bring our readers up to speed – can you introduce yourself and share your story?
I started out just dabbling in music in my uncle’s basement. Nothing really serious just doing it for fun because my uncle made beats all the time. He dropped a few mixtapes and at the time he was one of my main male figures in my life. Naturally, it peaked my interest and I made a few songs. It was sort of short lived when I did enjoy the experience. A few years passed and my cousin asked me if I wanted to be a part of his music collective. I was pretty hesitant because I didn’t really have any experience and I didn’t think I had talent to match it either. He told me to send him one of the songs I worked on with my uncle. So I did, and he was impressed and saw potential. That was probably the official start of OuterZone. We tried to grow the team and added members along the years but eventually they all fizzled out. Everything from videographers to artists and producers. Some things just aren’t meant to be. For a long time we were pretty content just being the two of us. We always had an aspirations to grow but you can’t force people to see your vision. A few years ago we added AJ Blu to the team. And from our first studio session together I think we could all tell that this was going to be the team moving forward. Everything just clicked and felt effortless. There were no egos. Just Three Brothers trying to make a name for themselves. And here we are.
Please talk to us about your music.
I’m JaSew, an artist for OuterZone records and 1/3 of the Three Headed Dragon. My music is such a weird thing to try to explain. I get inspiration and guidance from so many different genres and time periods. It really just depends on the emotion that I’m feeling when I’m writing. I have some modern hip hop influence but growing up I I listened to a lot of funk and soul. I enjoy rock as well. Is honestly so many things that I pull from when I get to writing a song. A lot of times lyrically I just let my heart speak for me. However I feel in that moment and the energy that I’m getting from the music is displayed in the words that I choose to say. I’m really big on honest expression and not holding myself back because of what other people might think. Our music is available everywhere and on all platforms.
So, as we mentioned to our audience earlier, you were introduced to us by Max Venus and we really admire them and what they’ve built. For folks who might not be as familiar, can you tell them a bit about your experience with Max.
Max is really the brain behind the entire operation. He’s the one that recruited me start the label and saw promise in my musical ability. I never really thought I’d be an artist, nor did I think I had the potential to grow as one. But I guess family sees things in you that you can’t see yourself. He’s my cousin by the way. We’ve been hanging out our entire lives. So to think that one day we would own a business together really never struck me. In our early stages of making music I feel like our styles were a little more similar. But as time passed we’ve become our own artists with so much personality being displayed throughout our music. I’ve recently been taking a more soulful melodic approach in Max has been delving into this poetic journey of lyricism. A studio session runs so naturally and the creativity bouncing off one another is unlike anything I’ve ever seen. OuterZone means the world to us. Just a band of Brothers trying to provide for our families and express ourselves. We’re just trying to build a community of creativity, love and artistry. As far as other people, we provide a voice to people of color and creatives all across the board. We promote productivity and positive outlook. We are for our people and as we grow we seek to bring the entire community up with us. All intentions are pure and we just want to see ourselves and everyone else shine.
