Today we’d like to introduce you to Jen Peterson.
Hi Jen, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I didn’t set out to be a social media strategist. I started working at a small business, helping with a little bit of everything, and one day they asked me to start posting on their social media as part of my daily duties. No training. No roadmap. Just “can you post something?”
So I did. And right away, I got curious. I noticed you could track what people engaged with and what they ignored. Certain posts got all the love, others crickets. That curiosity pulled me in fast. I have a degree in psychology, so I naturally started tying everything I was learning back to human behavior. Why do people stop scrolling? What makes something feel relatable? What builds trust? That connection between psychology and strategy lit me up.
At the same time, I was deep in mom life—raising six kids and trying to find a way to do meaningful work while still being present at home. I started helping other small businesses with their content. Writing captions. Cleaning up their Instagram. Helping them feel more confident and clear about how they were showing up online.
That’s when Slay Social with Jen was born. I realized most business owners weren’t struggling because they didn’t care. They were overwhelmed. They needed strategy, but they also needed support from someone who got it. Someone who could make it all feel a little easier and a lot more human.
Now I coach business owners on how to build content that connects and manage Meta ads that actually get results. I’ve worked with boutiques, stylists, wellness pros, therapists, and even welding businesses. My work is grounded in strategy, fueled by storytelling, and backed by my love for understanding how people think and behave.
This business wasn’t built overnight. It came from real life, late nights, trial and error, and a deep belief that marketing doesn’t have to feel hard or fake. It just has to feel like you.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Definitely not a smooth road. But honestly, I don’t think I’d trust anyone who said it was.
There have been plenty of highs, but also a lot of moments where I questioned everything. In the early days, I overdelivered like crazy because I tied my worth to my clients’ results. I said yes to clients who weren’t a great fit because I needed the money. I ignored red flags. I thought if I just worked harder, it would all fall into place. No surprise that led straight to burnout.
At the same time, I was juggling business and motherhood. Trying to grow a company while raising six kids is no joke. There were days I was writing strategy decks with a baby on my hip and answering client messages during school pickup. I was constantly trying to be everything to everyone.
I also had to learn how to trust myself. There is so much noise in this industry. So many people shouting about what you should be doing. But the truth is, I had to build a business that worked for me. One that felt sustainable. One that allowed space for life, not just constant hustle.
The struggle taught me boundaries. It taught me to work smarter. It showed me that success isn’t about doing more. It’s about doing what matters most and letting the rest go.
So no, it hasn’t been smooth. But it’s been worth it!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Slay Social with Jen isn’t just my business. It’s the thing I created after seeing way too many business owners running themselves ragged trying to show up online without a real plan.
I help business owners stop guessing when it comes to their content and ads. What I really specialize in is Meta ad management and social media coaching that feels doable, strategic, and actually human. I work with people who are done with the hustle and just want their marketing to work without it taking over their life.
I’m known for making things make sense. I simplify the techy stuff, help you find your voice, and build a system that brings in leads and sales whether you’re posting every day or not. Most of my clients come to me overwhelmed or burned out, and I help them calm the chaos and finally feel confident about how they’re showing up online.
What sets me apart? I don’t just hand over a checklist and wish you luck. I get in there with you. I bring my psychology background, storytelling love, and real-world experience to help you build something that feels like you. I’m not here for surface-level fluff I care about the heart behind your brand and the humans you’re trying to reach.
What I’m most proud of is the way my clients walk away feeling clear and excited again. Whether we’re running ads that bring in dream clients or cleaning up your content strategy so it finally clicks, my goal is to make sure your marketing is working for you, not draining the life out of you.
Slay Social is where strategy meets soul. And if you’re tired of trying to figure it all out on your own, I’d love to show you a better way.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
My biggest advice? Stop trying to force yourself into rooms that don’t feel good. Not every “networking opportunity” is worth your energy. Look for people who make you feel safe and challenged, not judged or lesser.
When it comes to finding a mentor, don’t just look for someone who’s successful. Look for someone who aligns with your values and how you want to live and work. I’ve learned more from people who live balanced, honest lives than from the loudest voices on the internet preaching hustle 24/7.
What’s worked well for me has been getting brave enough to ask. DM the person. Show up to the event. Take the free training and actually engage. So much of my growth came from being willing to say, “Hey, I love what you’re doing. I’d love to learn from you if you’re open to it.”
Also, don’t underestimate the power of peer mentorship. Some of the best connections I’ve made came from other women building their businesses right alongside me. We swap ideas, hype each other up, and grow together.
The right people are out there. Don’t try to be the smartest person in the room. Be the most curious. And keep showing up with a willingness to learn and serve. That energy will always attract the right people.
