Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenna Orosco.
Hi Jenna, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve worked in the mental health field for the last twenty years with foster children, unhoused populations, in a correctional facility and in healthcare. Frustrated with how many mental health departments are run and how burnt out many therapists were, I started my own private practice in 2017! I wanted to be able to connect more deeply than you can do when you have a 100 people on your caseload (true story), and work with people struggling with areas that I had extensive knowledge in (infertility and grief). I never thought I would have my own business, it has its share of challenges but I love it! I like having the time to focus on my clients and adjust my schedule to see people based on their needs. I also guard my time outside of work for my family and to follow creative pursuits.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely not! Most of my struggles have involved working with insurance companies who are difficult to get paneled with and needlessly complicated. My degrees are in mental health, not in business, so figuring out how to run a business is something I continue to learn. There are times though when I just make a mistake, and I try my hardest to acknowledge the mistake without minimizing it or berating myself. I then follow up my accountability with finding some way to do something about it, whether it is apologizing or implementing new policies.
Private practice can be isolating at times, you don’t have coworkers you run into at the water cooler to chat or bounce ideas off of. I have started a consultation group in the past and joined other groups to try to connect with other therapists in the area. We all need a community:)
You have to be willing to learn business and also learn about yourself as a business owner, and have your own reasons why it’s worth it.
We’ve been impressed with Resolve Counseling LLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
In my practice, Resolve Counseling LLC, I have been able to adjust my focus toward working with those populations with various interests that I feel connected to. My primary passions are areas that I have personally experienced and then received additional training in: infertility and grief. My infertility journey was monumental and changed my life in ways I could never have anticipated. It is an invisible loss that 1 out of 8 adults in this country experience, and in my opinion the mental health care for this is severely lacking. I work with individuals and couples who are struggling to get pregnant, contemplating assisted reproductive methods to have a baby, exploring adoption, or are grieving and moving forward in their life without children. I’m currently writing a book on this so stay tuned:)
You can’t have infertility without grief, so that was my initial intro into the world of bereavement. But the more I learned and was confronted with my own fears and discomfort around grief, the more I realized we do a disservice to people in grief, which is shocking because we will all experience it. Grief does not need to be rushed or ignored or covered in platitudes, it needs space. It needs to be witnessed. People need to share their loss without fear of judgement, and I am honored to be able to provide that for folks who are mourning the loss of their beloved.
I also love working with adolescents/young adults as they deal with this crazy world we live in and learn more about themselves, their values and their worth. I enjoy educating people on mental health symptoms and then helping people care for their mental health needs. This could include the management of depression, anxiety, ADHD or trauma symptoms. Change can also be very dis-regulating to people, and I find it important to assist people navigating life transitions (change in job, relationships, relocating, going to college etc). It is essential to me to do my best to ensure that my practice is inclusive and welcoming for everyone.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
What we know about trauma is shifting and evolving. The mental health field is acknowledging more the impact of complex trauma as opposed to one big incident causing trauma. Unfortunately so many people grew up in unsafe and unsupportive homes. Understanding the residue that leaves on a person as they grow, as well as ways to heal, are so powerful.
A.I. is also a big deal! I have a number of clients tell me they put there symptoms into Chatgpt in order to get a diagnosis and to guide them as they seek treatment. It is not my area of expertise, I’m pretty old school regarding technology, but it is here and will be part of our lives. There are benefits and limitations to A.I. and we need to be cautious and intentional utilizing it.
