Meet Jerry Silva of Aurora

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jerry Silva.

Hi Jerry, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have been a life-long student of martial arts. I started when I was 5 years old. My grandmother wanted me to learn how to protect myself as a child.

Our business opened its doors In July 2006. It was a tough and scary decision to open a martial arts business. I recently graduated with my master’s degree, MBA a year prior to the opening of our academy. It wasn’t my goal to open up a business; my original goal was to start law school after graduate school. My long-term goal was to become a Federal Judge and live my life on the bench. However, after grad school, I found myself in a tough position. The corporate job I was working for, decided to let me go. Law school wouldn’t start for another year, and I needed a way to make money and take care of my family. Up until this point I was teaching martial arts on the weekends and was making money, but not enough to survive. I had a student who strongly encouraged me to open a professional school. So, I did. The rest was history and our business has been open for almost 20 years now.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
There have been many challenges. Lots of uphill battles when starting a new business. But, for whatever reason I feel we hit more hills than most people. Here are a few:

-Marketing & consumer trust
-Taxes
-Employee’s

We hit the great recession, that almost put us out of business. There was the covid shut down, 2023 Banking crisis
and a few others I can’t recall.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I teach martial arts & self-defense to families.

We teach a Chinese Kung Fu Martial Arts and Contemporary Wushu. The wushu is competitive and we travel all throughout the country and internationally for competitions.

Our main area of focus is self-defense. Teaching kids how to protect themselves physically and mentally.

We do as many local performances as we can to help spread the power and beauty of Chinese martial arts and Wushu. It’s through the performances where the students learn and strengthen their self-esteem and passion.

What makes you happy?
(My wife and children are my happiness)

What makes me happy, is seeing other people happy. If I can have a part in their happiness that’s even better. There is so much negativity in the world these days, I try to look for the happiness in everything I do or who interact with.
