Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Tomcheck.
Hi Jessica, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started my tattoo career in 2021, when the pandemic was still extremely prevalent. Businesses were starting to re-open, with the stipulation that they enforced wearing masks and social distancing. Luckily, I was working at a studio that allowed each artist to have their own room to tattoo in. From day one, I knew that I wanted to be a shop owner and was trained with that in mind. Fast forward a couple of years, and the opportunity arose for me to open Synapse Tattoo Studio in November of 2023. Not long after opening, I had two incredibly talented artists (Kristyn Borglum and Jessica Flanagan) working alongside me, helping me build the studio into a highly reputable and respectable business. The first year was pretty surreal, to be honest. I wish I had the right words to express the gratitude I have for those two. They are such a huge part of the studio’s success and they deserve immense recognition for it.
Fast forward to 2025, these two lovely humans received amazing opportunities that meant they had to leave Synapse Tattoo Studio. Although I miss them dearly, I am so excited for the next steps in both of their journeys. However, this has left the studio looking for new artists to join the shop family. Synapse Tattoo Studio is currently hiring, so if you know of any talented artists with big hearts looking for a new shop to call home, I’d love to hear from them!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
In some ways, yes, in others, no. I was fortunate that the three of us at Synapse’s inception had our own clientele built from previous shop experiences. The studio is private and functions by appointments only, so our previously established client base was crucial to getting us up and running as quickly as we did.
However, most tattoo artists have faced an uphill battle throughout the past few years. Based on the current financial climate, it’s taking a lot more persistence and creativity to get clients in and to keep business running. I’m so fortunate that we’ve been able to stay afloat.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
In addition to being the owner of Synapse Tattoo Studio, I am a tattoo artist who specializes in black and grey realism. I’m mainly known for my nature tattoos, whether that’s landscapes or animals; however, I’m also hoping to expand my craft into some more creative realms such as fantasy and surrealism. I have a passion for creating portraits of both pets and people. I pride myself on being able to capture the likeness and personality of the individuals I draw, and I’d love to share this talent through tattoos as well. Whether it’s a favourite character from TV, a video game, a book, or a loved one, I’d love to tattoo them. Have something weird, ethereal, or even spooky in mind? Let’s make it happen! I especially love any tattoo that brings a smile to your face when you look at it.
As far as what I’m most proud of and what sets me apart from others, there are two main things. My attention to detail and perfectionism within my craft allow me to create breathtaking tattoos. Realism requires a certain level of patience, which I take pride in. The other main thing is personality. In a world filled with extremely talented artists, I believe what sets us apart is our personalities. I take pride in how my background and values transfer into my interactions with clients. Kindness, empathy, and respect are crucial to me. Inclusivity is crucial to me. Awareness and acceptance of mental health are crucial to me. And it shows in how I treat each and every one of my clients.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I would love to have another artist or two join my little shop family. I’d love for Synapse Tattoo Studio to continue building a name for itself as not only a reputable tattoo studio, but as a warm and welcoming place that sets a new standard within the tattooing community. I’m hoping that the studio can also become a hub for supporting other local artists in a variety of ways. I want Synapse to be an active part of the community, with regular engagement from our artists, participation in charitable events, and giving back in whatever ways we can.
