Meet John Burns of Denver Shaolin Kung Fu Tai Chi Institute

Today we’d like to introduce you to John Burns.

Hi John, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Denver Shaolin Kung Fu Tai Chi Institute was founded by Sifu Tony Timmer in 2010. During this time he taught numerous students Shaolin Kung Fu, Yang Tai Chi, Wing Chun, Hung Gar, Contemporary Wushu, and more.

After his untimely passing in September of 2017, his senior students, John Burns, Christopher Francheschi, William Morales, and Paul Sahertian , continued his legacy by teaching Shaolin, Tai Chi, and Wushu.

We have continue to this day learning, growing, and helping our students become stronger and healthier, both mentally and physically.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has been far from smooth. Taking over the school was unexpected for all of us, and we had to learn how to teach and run a business, while all holding day jobs.

Just as the school was growing and becoming more stable, Covid hit and shut us down. Putting us almost back to square one. But we worked to support our students during this time, and have bounced back stronger than before. We moved to a larger and better location at the very end of 2020.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Denver Shaolin Kung Fu Tai Chi Institute?
We specialize in teaching Chinese Martial arts. Primarily Shaolin Kung Fu, Contemporary Wushu, and Yang Tai Chi.

In pursuit of this all of the owners and instructors also actively seek out instructors to keep learning and growing. We have traveled to China, Korea, and across the US to achieve this goal. We feel a teacher who stops learning, is failing their students.

We also have worked to develop a curriculum that helps students really learn and understand what they are doing, not only watch and follow along.

We are incredibly proud of the supportive community we have developed. Where everyone begins where they are, and works to support and help each other grow along their own path.

Any big plans?
We are worming to develope more support for the community outside the school. Offering more free events, demonstrations, and cultural education.

Including bringing world class instructors to the Denver area, for anyone to work with and learn from.
