Today we’d like to introduce you to Joslyn Nguyen
Hi Joslyn, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started my hair journey back in 2018. After graduating from cosmetology school in 2019 I was super eager to start taking clients. But the whole world stopped in 2020. I took that time to reflect on my goals & how I wanted to see my life in the next 5 years. I started working July of 2020. Now, 5 years later, I am a small business owner.
I am not the type of person to set big goals for myself. But more micro goals that are achievable yet eventually paint a bigger picture. The rest of my story isn’t finished, but I really can’t tell you what my next move is. I guess whatever path the universe has for me. And I will be taking all the chances & risks.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Life is never smooth. But you can control how you view situations. Back then I would have told you that a few business owners I have worked for weren’t great. And how some owners like to take advantage of young stylists.
Now, I would say every business owner I have worked for have all taught me different things that shaped me into the stylist I am today.
The biggest struggle I would say for every new stylist, is that we all think we know everything. Yet we know nothing. How to consult, how to not let clients walk all over you, how to speak up for yourself. All these things can’t be taught to a certain degree. Every young stylist will struggle with self confidence for a little bit but we figure it out pretty quick I would say.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a fun & cool hairstylist(; I mainly specialize in dimensional color & lived in blondes. Although, I’m a pretty well rounded stylist. I am known for being able to completely transform super dark hair to super blonde transformations.I am also known for having dope conversations & making sure every guest is comfortable in my chair(:
Within the first of business, I got offered an opportunity to fly out to LA & shoot a blonding campaign for an amazing brand. Danger Jones. I never could have never imagined an opportunity like this to find me in this lifetime. With this opportunity, I have pushed myself to do better & further my education to make sure I put my best work worth.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Do not compare yourself to other stylists. That was the hardest thing for me to learn. Yet I catch myself to this day sometimes feeling like I am not doing enough & how another stylist is better than me. Put your best work worth & trust in the universe to take you where you are meant to be. Just because the person next to you has 3 brand deals with 15k followers does not make you any less talented for deserving of opportunities.
On top of that, I understand with those feelings of being unworthy. Sometimes stylists stop supporting other stylists. Jealousy is a toxic drug. My best advice is never stop supporting the people around you even if they are where YOU want to be. We need to build a community not tear it down.
