Meet J’rai Hammonds of Get Up And GLO Fitness

Today we’d like to introduce you to J’rai Hammonds.

Hi J’rai, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
“Get Up And GLO” started in the summer of 2014 in my garage. I began developing strength and conditioning routines in order to keep my body in shape for dance. Dancers started reaching out to me for training sessions and I went on to become a certified fitness coach. As I suffered from various dance injuries I wanted to create a tool that would be helpful for physical therapy, at home workouts, and the gym. I launched the fabric resistance “GLO Bands” and eventually released athleisure wear “GLO Gear”.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
During my time dancing in New York City at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater on a professional division scholarship, I got a huge tear in my labrum. This injury caused me to get hip surgery and spend an entire summer in full recovery mode. I struggled to feel complete without my usual “Get Up And GLO” fitness routines, however this time was necessary. I wanted to create a resistance band that could withstand all of my physical therapy exercises without moving or tearing. I was able to develop my first fitness product and launch “GLO Bands”.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I believe that to “Get Up And GLO” is to wake up each day and BE the best YOU. Movement is medicine and flexibility is the fountain of youth. I aspire to make health and wellness accessible to everyone. Team GLO is a community that encourages one another to think about their “why” and chase their dreams. The GLO Life athleisure collection represents “GLO” due to the versatility and designs featured to be worn by all shapes and sizes.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
I think the entire world learned the importance of wellness during the Covid-19 crisis! As a young child, I made the decision to become pescatarian and now I am vegan. I realized I hardly ever get sick since I changed my eating habits. Most of our problems are sourced from our diet. If you eat more fruits and vegetables and exercise for at least 30 minutes 3 times a week, your immune system will become stronger.
