Today we’d like to introduce you to Kailee Lenczycki.
Hi Kailee, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My journey into the mental health field started 17 years ago. I was drawn to psychiatry early on and spent the first part of my career in community mental health and inpatient settings. Those years gave me a deep understanding of how fragmented and impersonal mental health care can be, and they also lit a fire in me to do things differently.
In 2017, I became a psychiatric nurse practitioner, and after several years of working in large systems, I realized I wanted more freedom to offer the kind of care I believed in, care that’s relational, holistic, and truly patient-centered. That led me to open Present Life Psychiatry, where I could build something aligned with those values from the ground up.
It started small, just me and a vision. But within the first 100 days, I was already seeing over 100 patients. That kind of rapid growth confirmed that people are looking for something different, a space where they’re seen as whole people, not just diagnoses.
It’s been a challenging, rewarding, and incredibly meaningful journey, and I’m so grateful to do this work.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but I’ve learned that the hard parts often bring the most growth. Starting my own practice meant stepping into an entirely new role as both a clinician and a business owner. Navigating the complexities of insurance credentialing, billing, and compliance, all while continuing to care for patients, was overwhelming at times.
There were moments of self-doubt, especially early on, and a lot of late nights spent figuring things out as I went. I also started the practice while balancing life as a mom of three, which brought its own set of challenges. But every struggle helped clarify my vision and pushed me to build a practice rooted in integrity, accessibility, and truly patient-centered care.
I’m proud of what I’ve built, and I’m still learning every day, but I wouldn’t trade the journey for anything. It’s been worth it to create something that aligns with my values and truly supports the people we serve.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Present Life Psychiatry is a holistic, relationship-centered psychiatric practice offering care for adolescents and adults. We specialize in treating anxiety, depression, bipolar, trauma, PTSD, OCD, ADHD, and perinatal mental health. While we offer expert medication management, what truly sets us apart is our commitment to treating the whole person, not just symptoms.
Our approach combines evidence-based psychiatry with integrative tools like lab testing, lifestyle interventions, pharmacogenetic testing, and supportive therapy. We offer all of our services via telehealth, which allows patients across Colorado to receive high-quality care from the comfort and privacy of their own homes, a convenience that many of our patients deeply value. We spend time getting to know our patients, understanding their story, and building a collaborative plan that fits their unique needs. It’s not a rushed or one-size-fits-all experience, and our patients feel that difference.
We’re also proud to be insurance-friendly, because we believe compassionate, high-quality care should be accessible. Since launching, our practice has grown rapidly, and we’re expanding into a group model so we can serve even more people who are looking for a thoughtful, personalized approach to mental health care.
I’m most proud of the reputation we’ve built: one of integrity, warmth, and genuine care. We’re not here to push pills or offer quick fixes. We’re here to walk alongside people in a meaningful way. If you’ve ever felt dismissed or unseen in your mental health journey, there’s a place for you here.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
One of the biggest pieces of advice I can offer is this: don’t let imposter syndrome keep you small. I spent too long questioning whether I was “ready enough” to start my own practice, and looking back, I wish I had made the leap sooner. Doubt was definitely holding me back. If you find yourself focusing on all the reasons you can’t, try asking: Why not you? Why is anyone else more qualified to build something meaningful?
You don’t need to have everything figured out today. You’ll figure it out when the time comes, and most of the time, the clarity comes after you start, not before. So much of business ownership is trial and error. Just take the next right step, stay grounded in your values, and trust that confidence will grow as you go.
Lean into your niche. You don’t have to be everything to everyone. The more I embraced what made my care different, holistic, relational, whole-person psychiatry, the more aligned everything became. The right patients found me because I stopped trying to practice the way others expected and started building the kind of care I truly believe in.
I also can’t overstate the importance of boundaries. When you’re building something from the ground up, it’s tempting to say yes to everything. But sustainable success requires protecting your time, energy, and values, especially in a field like mental health, where burnout is common.
And above all, surround yourself with a strong support system. I’m incredibly grateful for the amazing community of mental health providers who’ve supported, encouraged, and collaborated with me along the way. Their generosity and partnership have absolutely helped fuel the success of my practice. This work is so much richer when done in connection. You truly don’t have to do it alone!
