Meet Kelly Bauman of Colorado Springs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelly Bauman.

Hi Kelly, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started baking at 10 years old, mainly to satisfy my own sweet tooth. I learned from YouTube videos and food bloggers and quickly discovered I had a passion for baking sweets. I started selling my creations and set up a stand at my neighborhood pool in Austin, Texas.

Business really started to take off when I was 14, I launched my website and began taking custom orders. My skills improved with each order, and I started taking on more and more, including vending at farmers’ markets, craft fairs, and other events. At 19, I left my retail job to pursue baking full-time.

A few months into running my home bakery full-time, I took my 2nd vacation to Colorado Springs and had never felt more at home. I knew it was time to make the move, and last month I moved my bakery business here to the Springs! Since then, I’ve hosted cookie decorating classes, taken on more orders than ever, and am now preparing for my Christmas popup shop in Denver on Dec 4th!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
There were definitely some struggles along the way! I think anyone that sets out to work for themselves is going to have some setbacks, it’s all part of the learning process. I had a few moments where I was ready to quit; sales were low, I was in a creative slump, etc.

In those moments, I asked myself “Why is doing this important to me?” I took time off to do some soul-searching. Driving home from that vacation, I found my “why” or my reason for pushing through the difficult times. Though there have still been some bumps in the road, I feel confident that I can face the challenges ahead knowing that my work serves a purpose.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in creating artisan cakes, cookies, and cake pops. I mainly work with cookies and am proud to say that each cookie (and all other treats) are handcrafted by me personally from the mixing all the way to the packaging.

My decorating style consists of bright, fun colors and a touch of whimsy; together they create a unique treat that will be the star of the show at any event.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
If I’ve learned anything from Covid, it’s that community is important. When life gets shifted in a completely different direction than you’d planned, having people in your corner is crucial. I’m incredibly thankful for the people that have stuck with me through this crazy journey, I wouldn’t be where I am without their support.
