Meet Kelly Holmes of Native Max

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelly Holmes

Hi Kelly, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Kelly Holmes (Mnicoujou Lakota from the Cheyenne River Reservation in South Dakota), through her work in business, fashion, and media, hopes to strengthen connections to culture and identity by inspiring and empowering readers while sharing stories with the world. Kelly is the founder and President of Native Max New Media, an award-winning global multimedia brand with a constellation of platforms and networks that expands Indigenous talent across print, digital, web, mobile, video, events, e-commerce, and partnerships. She is also editor-in-chief of Native Max Magazine, a glossy publication that features the fashion, culture, and lifestyle of Native American and First Nations people. After almost 12 years of creating and producing content, Native Max Magazine remains as one of the most relevant and recognizable Indigenous brands in the U.S. and Canada.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t been a smooth road, but the challenges have shaped my journey. One of the biggest struggles has been navigating the complexities of breaking into the mainstream media and fashion industries as an Indigenous brand. We’ve faced barriers related to visibility and representation, often needing to work twice as hard to ensure our voices and stories are seen and heard.

Financial hurdles have also been significant. Securing funding and resources for our projects has sometimes been difficult, especially in an industry that doesn’t always prioritize or understand the value of Indigenous perspectives. We’ve had to be resourceful and innovative, often relying on the support of our community and allies to keep moving forward.

Another challenge has been combating stereotypes and misconceptions about Indigenous culture. Ensuring that our work accurately and respectfully represents the diversity and richness of Indigenous experiences requires constant vigilance and dedication. We strive to educate and shift perceptions, but it’s an ongoing effort.

Despite these struggles, the support from our community, the passion of our team, and the impact of our work have made the journey incredibly rewarding. Each obstacle has been a lesson, each setback an opportunity to grow stronger and more determined. The road may not have been smooth, but it has been meaningful, and we’re proud of what we’ve achieved and excited for what’s to come.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
Several resources help me do my best in life, both at work and beyond. I find inspiration and guidance from a blend of modern media and traditional wisdom. On the one hand, I listen to top female boss podcasts that provide invaluable insights into leadership, entrepreneurship, and personal development. These podcasts feature powerful stories and practical advice from successful women across various industries, offering fresh perspectives and motivating me to continue striving for excellence.

On the other hand, I deeply value the cultural stories passed down through generations within my community. These stories, shared by our elders and family, carry profound lessons about resilience, identity, and the importance of community. They remind me of the strength and wisdom of our ancestors and ground me in my cultural heritage. Listening to these narratives helps me stay connected to my roots and provides a rich source of inspiration and guidance in both my personal and professional life.

This combination of contemporary resources and traditional teachings allows me to navigate challenges with a balanced and informed approach. It ensures that I stay motivated, culturally grounded, and equipped with the knowledge and insights needed to make a positive impact through my work.
