Meet Kelly Swann of Let Em Have It Salon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelly Swann.

Hi Kelly, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My name is Kelly Swann and I am the grateful owner of Let Em Have It Salon also known as LEHI in the Uptown neighborhood of Denver. Our salon is the only salon in Colorado with a B Corp certification and we are incredibly proud of that. The founder of our salon set out to be a pioneer of sustainable beauty in Denver and we were also the first salon in the area to partner with Green Circle salons to divert up to 95% of our salon waste. As a hairstylist and salon owner I believe we have a responsibility to do our best to make a positive impact and our focus is sustainability and healthy hair!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The entrepreneurial journey is certainly not for the faint of heart – instead of sharing the laundry list of challenges I have faced in my time as a salon owner I want to share my biggest lesson: In order to meet life’s challenges and remain grounded for all that life throws at you, it is important to take time each day to tend to your mental and spiritual wellbeing. The times that have been the hardest were made harder if I put my own needs on the back burner and other times seemed easier to face if I prioritized my mental/spiritual/physical health. Hard things will arise and we can face them as long as we are giving ourselves the love we need on a day to day basis.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Our salon is 1 in 3 Salons in North America that has achieved a B Corp certification! We use our Business as a Force for Good and prioritize People & Planet. Our goal is to be a part of the positive shift in our industry. The beauty industry can be wildly toxic and we believe there is a better way which is why we partner with other B Corps in the industry such as Davines, Green Circle Salons and Innersense Organic Beauty.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
My entire time as a business owner has been one risk after another. This is not a path of security so I have risked my own financial stability in pursuit of trying to build out my dream salon experience that I offer to my team and our clients. Truly, this journey has been one experiment after another – when I first began I had major imposter syndrome and now a few years in, I can see that most of us are just doing our best and living from one experiment to another! You can’t get better if you don’t leave your comfort zone so I think it’s important to try the scary things – the usually lead you to your next best thing!
