Today we’d like to introduce you to Kinsey Sarian.
Hi Kinsey, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I always wanted to be on Broadway. It was the only path I saw as an option for myself. I went to college in Santa Fe, NM on the path to getting a BFA in Musical Theatre. Four hip surgeries later, my surgeons and professors made me face the harsh reality that professional dancing was not an option, and I likely would not be able to keep up with the New York level of talent. I felt like my life had been turned upside down, and I was starting over.
I reached out to a planning company based in Santa Fe called Magnolia events. The owner, Minuet, took me under her wing and taught me everything I needed to know to let me dive head-first into the event planning world. When I graduated school, I planned to move back to Denver and open a sister company to Magnolia under Minuet’s guidance. In August of 2017, Right as Rayne Events was up and running.
A few months in, Minuet called me and said she wanted to go back to med school and wanted me to buy Magnolia Events from her. Fast forward to now, we just wrapped up our 5th season with two locations. I am so proud of the work my team and I have put in to grow Right as Rayne to what it is today, and I am so grateful for all of the chances I was given by the people in this industry to succeed.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I don’t know of any small business owner who would use the word “smooth” to describe their experience. If you ever meet one, find out their secret and sell it for lots of money! I of course have had the normal struggles like learning to manage a team, learning business taxes, navigating unhappy or difficult customers, etc.
All of these types of things take a toll, but they are expected and will happen again and again throughout the existence of my company. I was prepared for those. The biggest struggle I have faced as a business owner so far was COVID, which I am sure is the answer to this question for many people. Running an event planning company during a global pandemic sounds impossible.
We got VERY lucky. With a small loan from the SBA and several loyal corporate event customers, we survived by quickly mastering virtual events and keeping expenses as low as possible while we waited to do all of the events we had planned on. I will be forever grateful to my team who were flexible and able to pivot through the ups and downs of what the pandemic brought for our field.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Right as Rayne Events is a full-service event planning company covering all types of events from weddings, to medical conferences, to brand launches, and more. We cover all aspects of events including marketing, website management, attendee tracking design, etc.
We have worked hard over the years to make relationships with all of the best vendors in our area to be able to create a rockin’ event vendor team for every event we do. We go into each event to make it better than the last, and truly enjoy what we do.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I was a bossy theatre kid. I can still be bossy and I still belt show tunes in the car, so I am not too sure anything has changed.
