Today we’d like to introduce you to Liz Carmines
Liz, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I always knew I wanted to do work that made a difference and be involved with the nonprofit sector. I started my career as a Peace Corps volunteer, then worked in nonprofit program development (AKA, a role wearing all the hats — we were just a staff of 2 full-time employees).
Through this role, I realized how important social media had become for our socialization and community building, and that sparked my interest in social media. I went on to work as the full-time Social Media Manager at a global organization, and while that was such a wonderful experience for my growth as a professional, I knew my heart wasn’t fully in it.
It was then that I realized what I wanted to do, support smaller organizations and businesses with their social media, and I created those opportunities for myself by starting my own business. Now I have the opportunity to work closely with purpose-driven clients as their social media strategist, content creator, and manager.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I don’t think business is ever a smooth road, my path surely hasn’t been! One of my biggest struggles has been dealing with confidence and imposter syndrome, especially due to starting a business in my 20s. It can also be challenging to build something from scratch and figure it all out as I go because there are so many decisions to make and responsibilities to handle as a business owner. However, I am very fortunate to have so many supportive and encouraging people around me that I can go to for advice, and I am really proud of the business I have created.
As you know, we’re big fans of Social with Purpose. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Social with Purpose provides organic social media services to purpose-driven businesses and nonprofit organizations. We specialize in helping these brands build a community on social media through engaging content. Our approach to social media is focused on building relationships by giving value and connecting with audiences. We stand out due to our ability to produce video content for clients in the Denver area so our clients can keep up with trends and avoid having to hire out for this service separately.
For nonprofit organizations, our understanding of the sector and how it operates is a value-add. We understand fundraising, navigating Boards of Directors, and other nonprofit-specific needs, which has led to many very successful partnerships with community-based organizations.
We also provide consulting to help nonprofit leaders and business owners who want to DIY their social media. We can help them develop their social media strategy and content plan, train them in creating content, and teach them how to measure success.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
Books – I love the book, “Building Your StoryBrand,” by Donald Miller. It’s a great resource for nonprofit leaders or business owners who are DIY’ing their marketing to lay the groundwork for their strategies.
Apps – Canva has always been one of my favorite tools, it is a very user-friendly platform for social media DIY’ers to create content.
Podcasts – 9 to 5ish with theSkimm and GirlBoss radio are two podcasts that have inspired me a lot as a business owner, I love getting to hear from successful women in business. For social media podcasts, I recommend Social Media Marketing with Michael Stelzner and Creator Club with Katie Steckly. Two great nonprofit-related podcasts I listen to are the We Are For Good Podcast and Missions to Movements.
