Today we’d like to introduce you to Lucas WOLF.
Hi Lucas, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to today?
In 2008 I was a mess. I knew I wanted to play music but was underdeveloped, shy, and probably lazy. I was bouncing around from serving job to serving job, knowing I wanted to write and play. My lady and I had split up. I previously thought about hitchhiking around the country, forcing myself to play on street corners to learn/ hone my craft and have experiences to inspire music. So at a bar in Tempe after work, I went across the street for a Beer (a Guinness that day). I was listening to the atmosphere on my iPod and thought, “maybe I’ll start the journey by hitchhiking to Minneapolis.” Then on the TV, which was airing on ESPN the Minnesota Twins came on. I left the bar and when I walked out the door, the first license plate I saw was Minnesota. I said, “one more sign, and I’m out.” I went to a friend’s house. I was house sitting and went to the pool. “I met a couple and during the introduction, they said, “we just got here from Minnesota.” That was it. The jet morning I walked out of Phoenix and began my journey as a musician. Fast forward 5 to 6 years later and I knew I needed to settle down and start playing out. Now I’ve released two albums and in 2019, I played 150+ shows, gigs, and events, and even through covid, I manage to play quite a bit.
Let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it hasn’t been smooth. I struggled with drinking. It took me a couple of tries and some seriously dark places, skipping off rock bottom for a time before I could put it down for good so far. I went into gigging blind. I had to learn the ins and outs of booking and promo, and hell, I’m still figuring it out. I had kids in 2012, then 2014, and 2020. Being a good father is as much a priority as being “Lucas wolf the musician, “so it’s been super tricky finding that balance, and I am still trying to sort out some details on how it can all work, but the kids need an active, engaged father, period. I don’t exist without them.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a Singer-Songwriter. I don’t write love songs or breakup songs. I specialize in lyrically driven, percussive acoustic guitar. My musicianship is relatively simple, but I bend genres and find myself lost somewhere in a folk singer realm with blues, jazz, and hip hop influences that rear their heads from time to time.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Thus far, I’d say very little. I stayed up most nights for years writing and practicing, sending emails and all the things one must do to book themselves. I did get lucky meeting a friend who was in a position to finance the first record, but I’m not sure the album has done much as of yet. It certainly was fortunate, but something I focused my energy on and manifested through diligence, busking daily. But hindsight is 2020 and if I had that same help now, I would be much brighter than I was then. There was a lot of stress going on at that time. Newly sober as well and I wasn’t thinking clearly. I kick myself in the ass nearly every day about that one. But I like to say that wisdom is merely the realization of how stupid we’ve been years prior. But other than that, I think a good work ethic and good songs have gotten me where I am, which is not where I want to land in the end, but I’ll take it. I think many of us songwriters would like the “lucky break,” but more often than not, that means fitting a specific “profile” which I have no interest in.
