Meet Lynn Kohl of Berthoud

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lynn Kohl

Hi Lynn, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have always had an artistic side that I tried numerous ways to express. Over 25 years ago I dabbled in decorating cakes. That brought great joy, but I had a young son at the time which was priority. So baking went on the back burner. Between the years I picked up water color painting and photography. As they were fun, I didn’t have the fire to pursue those as a business. It wasn’t until the pandemic, like many people, I found myself spending more time at home and seeking ways to satisfy my creative outlet. I stumbled upon an online cookie decorating class. I was intrigued yet cookies in the past were always hard for me. I could never get them to hold their shape let alone taste good. With some new tricks and techniques, I baked my first batch. I was so excited that they kept their shape AND they tasted amazing. I definitely found my niche. As I rolled out the dough and decorated each cookie, I felt a sense of comfort and nostalgia. I wasn’t stressed. I began experimenting with different flavors and designs, turning simple sugar cookies into little works of edible art. It was therapy for me. It was very rewarding. And every batch taught me something new.

I shared my creations with friends and family. I would design a cookie in something that reminded me of what they enjoyed. For example, a friend that likes hummingbirds, I made her hummingbird cookies. It was very personal to them and the response was overwhelmingly positive. People were seeking sweet treats that would add a personal touch for their events such as birthdays, bridal/baby showers, holidays, etc. Encouraged by their enthusiasm, it was clear to start my own sugar cookie company. I spent hours perfecting my techniques all while navigating the logistics of a small business. I had a great support system and I jumped in with both feet. I am driven by the desire to spread joy and connection through my cookies. I officially launched my sugar cookie company a little over a year ago. I am determined to spread sweetness and happiness one cookie at a time. Each batch reflects my love for baking and art, and I am still learn something new from each order. I find it fascinating that a simple cookie can bring so much joy.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have been some hiccups along the way. Learning how to market and sell a product that you need to see AND taste to know what you are getting is a bit challenging. I am so thankful for those that were my taste testers. I also had to learn how to be a business and not just a hobby baker. I still struggle with this some days. It’s a learning process for sure, but am enjoying the journey.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
In my artistic journey, I specialize in the enchanting world of cookie decorating, where each sugar cookie becomes a vibrant canvas waiting to be transformed. My work is characterized by intricate designs that blend color, texture, and creativity, resulting in visually stunning pieces that are as delightful to look at as they are to eat. I’m known for my ability to capture the essence of special moments—birthdays, holidays, and milestones—through custom themes and designs that resonate with my customers. What I’m most proud of is the way my cookies bring people together, heart-warming smiles and sparking joy during celebrations. What sets me apart from others is my commitment to storytelling through basic ingredients – sugar, butter, flour, etc. Each cookie is not just a treat but a unique expression of artistry, crafted with precision and infused with personal touches that reflect the heart behind the creation. I’m also proud that this year I decided to add teaching decorating classes to my community. I want to share this joy with others in a different way. With these classes, students will say that they have zero artistic skills or that their cookies won’t look good. I then encourage them to come to class with a positive attitude and let’s see what happens. Every time they are so pleasantly surprised. And at the end of it all, you are just going to eat the cookie. Everyone has fun, they learn something new, and they get a delicious treat. That is a win win win!

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I was a quiet and imaginative child, always drawn to colors and textures. My days were filled with creative exploration, whether it was doodling in the margins of my school notebooks or painting bright masterpieces on canvas during art class. Art was my language, a way to express feelings and ideas that words couldn’t capture. My childhood was a canvas of exploration and inspiration, laying the foundation for a lifelong passion for art.
