Today we’d like to introduce you to Madi Lyn.
Hi Madi, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
Right before the pandemic, I graduated from the University of Colorado Boulder with a degree in Film Production – one of the hardest-hit industries by the pandemic. As someone just getting into the industry, this was devastating.
I made short films from home, but I longed for more. As things began opening up safely, I found a community here in Denver of Horror fanatics. Through this community, I was able to found Ghoul’s Night Productions – my production company with my business partner Drew Roberts and start making short horror films with all local creators.
It’s been a total whirlwind and I am thriving in a community in which I truly belong.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There were quite a few hiccups along the way. I almost moved out of state, to the point where I’d moved all of my belongings to a swank little apartment in Los Angeles. However, the pull of Denver horror was too strong, so I promptly moved everything I own back -two cross country moves in two months.
We have also had our fair share of disappointments, directors bailing at the last minute, whether ruining shots, technical problems, all manner of issues, but each one has had a relatively simple solution. I couldn’t be more grateful to my business partner who always shows up ready to solve whatever problems we may have.
Working with such dedicated, passionate people has really shown me that filmmaking is mostly about problem-solving and those who are in it for the love of movies, will happily approach any problem or challenge with a grin.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I cut my teeth making my own films, and as much as I still love doing so – I found a natural talent at producing. I have long been a logistics person, I love planning things in extreme detail and making sure I have a backup plan in case the first plan doesn’t work out.
Naturally, this translated to my ability to help filmmakers accomplish their vision on screen. I’ve done everything from coordinate and arrange auditions, to lock down locations for filming, even stepping in as a literal extra pair of hands on the screen.
I love turning an idea into an actual project with working pieces, taking something from conception to completion, and having a tangible product that one can be proud of.
What matters most to you? Why?
Artistic and creative freedom matters most. A Ghoul’s Night Productions, we want creators to maintain artistic control above anything. Both Drew and I are artists too, so we want any writers, directors, filmmakers, or photographers that work with us to be able to stay true to their vision.
The most disappointing thing in cinema is being able to see where a filmmaker was made to change an aspect of their work to soothe a studio exec or to pander to a specific audience for the sake of pure profit. We want to make good art, and we want artists to keep their vision true.
We will figure out a way to bring that vision to life, without the hindrance of artistic pessimists or profit hunger producers.
