Today we’d like to introduce you to Mandy McGowan.
Hi Mandy, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I started my entrepreneurial journey about 17 years ago by accident. I was working for a company out of Boulder and the owner wanted to retire and offered to help me get set up to take over his business. I was really great at what I did but knew nothing about running a business, so this support was so appreciated.
Over the first 5 years, I grew my business and hired employees. I was doing almost a million in revenue and had around 30 employees. From the outside looking in, things were great. I had a lot of flexibility in my schedule, I was able to attend all my kid’s events at school and I was able to network and meet friends and colleagues for coffee and lunch just about any time they invited me.
Behind the scenes was another story. I was broke. I was in lots of debt from loans I had taken to cover payroll and operating expenses. I was delivering pizza to earn money to pay our household bills because I hadn’t taken a paycheck from my business in over 10 months.
There is not much that I can think of that is as embarrassing as working in the accounting industry and having a business that is on the verge of bankruptcy. I had a rock bottom moment that pushed me to get really clear on what had happened and what I needed to do to right the ship.
It was not an easy journey, but over the next 18 months, I was able to turn the business around. I paid off over 6 figures of debt, started taking a paycheck again, and had cash in the bank and profits on paper to show for it. I have never gotten into a situation like that again, but that experience has proved invaluable in how I am able to work with my clients and support them in their businesses.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
This road has been anything but smooth, however I would not change it either. Being on the verge of bankruptcy alone was hard, but when you combine that with the fact that at the same time, I was going through a divorce, my attention was split.
The embarrassment of my situation was not something I talked about with anyone, so I carried it alone and walked into each day knowing I had to move the needle so to speak. I had to do the hard things and make the hard decisions if I wanted to turn things around.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I work with my clients on the finance side of their business. I am a profit coach helping my clients see the possibility and the roadmap of how to get there all while working on their subconscious beliefs and patterns around money so that they can feel worthy of the success they can create. I also have a bookkeeping team that works with our clients to help them have timely and accurate visibility into their finances so they can confidently make financial decisions.
I love working with my clients to help them create something that can be a legacy, something they can be proud to call their own, and create a ripple effect in life. When a business owner does good, they impact their team, their clients, and their families- and this is what I love about the work I do.
What matters most to you?
My family matters most to me. As my kids have gotten older and the days feel shorter, I really value time with my family whether that is sitting down for dinner, or a simple car ride where we get to be together.
