Meet Martha Lucas of Lucas Acupuncture and My Zen Skin Care

Today we’d like to introduce you to Martha Lucas.

Martha Lucas

Hi Martha, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I started my career in Western medicine as a Research Psychologist doing research in the hospital setting. My patients (or study subjects if you will) were men who had recently had bypass surgery. While I was working with them during the hospital stay, I started to wonder what else needed to happen to make their healing complete. I knew that their ” engine” (heart) had been fixed but what about the rest of the system?

I didn’t think modern medicine was the way to go with that because I started to study ancient medicines like Reiki which eventually led to Chinese medicine school. I met my pulse diagnosis mentor there who made me fall in love with finding energetic health imbalances in people’s pulses, seeing how acupuncture needles change those patterns, and helping people who had “tried everything” to get well but were now in my office to try Chinese medicine. More than 20 years later, here I am still loving what I do.

Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, not smooth at all especially in the last few years. I have my private practice but also teach seminars to other Chinese medicine practitioners. It was easy to start because I used to teach in the university setting so am comfortable in front of groups and love to educate.

I taught in places all over the world, Turkey being my Asian/European “center”. Well, the pandemic completely stopped my teaching – because it was all in person at the time – so my income plummeted. And naturally, no one wanted to come to the clinic in person out of fear. The government closed us (acupuncturists) down for about 6 weeks. To try to recover at least some of my teaching income, I rushed to put seminars online. That’s not my favorite way to teach in the least but I had to try to stay in business.

I also reignited my long-distance Reiki practice so was giving Reiki to people all over the world once again. I also created a natural skincare line that uses Chinese herbs, My Zen Skin Care, before the pandemic but because many of our customers were struggling financially as well, sales went down. It has been quite the struggle to rebuild – and continue to rebuild – after 2020.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My business has 3 “arms”:

1. Chinese medicine and Acupuncture private practice where I offer treatments that help with some of the medical issues where modern medicine can fall short – migraines, PMS, fertility, chemotherapy side effects, anxiety, and depression. My love is to help people who have “tried everything” but still aren’t feeling healthy or happy. I have had more than 20 years of experience treating people and educating them about how they can help themselves health-wise.

2. My skincare line is a natural, sustainably sourced line that includes Chinese herbs to help solve skin care issues and keep your skin looking healthy. It is called My Zen Skin Care and includes a men’s skincare line as well that is called Men Zen. Our line of products is affordable and good for you.

3. I teach Chinese medicine/acupuncture courses to other practitioners who want to advance their practices.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Honestly, my family first makes me happy.

I am a grandmother who is blessed that my grands live in the Denver area so I can see them. But, thank God I love my work too because they are growing up, two in high school, so grandma is not on their minds much.
