Meet Megan and Maddie Cody

Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan and Maddie Cody. Them and their team share their story with us below:

Megan and Maddie Cody grew up in a musical family. Their dad had been playing guitar to them since they were born and started taking them to bluegrass festivals like Rockygrass and Pagosa Folk ‘n Bluegrass when they were about 6 and 8. Around this same age, Megan and Maddie got their first guitars. They started playing and singing together shortly after this and began playing as the Cody Sisters around the ages of 9 and 11. Since then, the Cody Sisters Band has gone from playing little coffee shops in their hometown, to theaters and festivals all around the US and UK. Megan and Maddie also teach music lessons to students of all ages in hopes of inspiring others to play music.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Growing up as young women in the music business has had its challenges. From a young age, we have experienced situations where we feel we have to prove ourselves worthy of respect from our audiences. In this male-dominated field, we have experienced people thinking and expecting less of us because we are women. We advocate for equality within this field and encourage young women to do what they love, even if they don’t always feel accepted.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
The Cody Sisters Band is a Denver/Boulder based bluegrass influenced folk group. The Cody Sisters combine propulsive instrumental solos and warm sister harmonies to forge a new sound unique to this band. They write a lot of original music while including their own takes on popular covers in their show.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Meeting people at festivals and other music events has been huge for us. Growing up as young musicians, it was hard for us to find people our age who were as passionate about this style of music as we were. At festivals, we were able to meet people who had gone through the same things as us and many of them became close friends and mentors.
