Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Foster.
Hi Melissa, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
From an early age, I always knew that I wanted to become a teacher and dedicated my life to making that happen. I got a degree, I moved cross-country, and I got my dream job as a third-grade teacher (I also got married and adopted my 2 handsome dogs along the way). I specialized in elementary education because I loved working with students to build routines and skills that could foster lifelong learning and growth. Doing this I was happy and fulfilled for many years.
So you can imagine my surprise when I realized a few years ago that I was struggling to feel the same excitement I felt as a child playing school in her bedroom, or as a new teacher encountering a group of expectant students in my classroom. It was hard to come to terms with the idea that my dream had evolved and I didn’t make the decision for a career change lightly.
I spent a lot of time evaluating what fueled my passion for education. It came down to this: I loved helping others learn and grow and was especially talented at creating calm environments that were organized. I knew I wanted to continue to help people with skills that came naturally to me and was aware of how life-changing an organized space could be.
I landed on professional organizing as a business that could perfectly help me translate my vision for transformative organized spaces and routines to a new audience. A friend helped me put together a business plan and, despite a COVID delay, I’ve been working steadily on Happy Home Organizing ever since.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My journey from teaching to professional organizing brought about a few challenges. One of the primary challenges was navigating a new terrain without a background in business. Transitioning from the structured world of education to entrepreneurship meant a steep learning curve in areas like finances, marketing, and operations.
It required diving into uncharted waters, grasping unfamiliar concepts, and seeking guidance to build a solid foundation for my business. Another significant hurdle was losing the support system ingrained in my teaching career. Teaching comes with a built-in community, a network of colleagues, and mentors, and a familiar environment. Stepping away meant departing from this support structure, which was both daunting and challenging.
To overcome this, I dedicated myself to networking. I actively sought out like-minded individuals, attended different events, and connected with other small business owners. Slowly but steadily, I began building a new support system, one that understood and supported my new journey into professional organizing.
The transition was marked by learning curves and the emotional challenge of leaving a familiar world behind. However, through perseverance, adaptability, and a proactive approach to learning and networking, I’ve tackled these obstacles, shaping my new path.

Happy Home Organizing aims to turn chaos into calm through decluttering and home organizing. I also assist with packing and unpacking before or after a move, as well as supporting clients while navigating life’s many transitions.
What sets Happy Home Organizing apart is a passion for teaching and a desire to empower clients. The goal is to not only assist clients in getting organized but also provide them with the tools and understanding to maintain that organization. The aim is to enable long-term positive changes and assist clients in leading more organized and fulfilling lives.
I want people to know that Happy Home Organizing is dedicated to building strong, personal connections with clients. I genuinely care about their needs, listen to understand their unique circumstances, and work to find solutions to fit their lifestyles.

What matters most to you? Why?
What matters most to me is a sense of purposeful fulfillment and the ability to make a positive impact on others’ lives. Teaching was not just a job but a passion—a way to inspire, educate, and help young minds grow.
As I explored professional organizing, it wasn’t just about a career shift but finding a new way to continue guiding and supporting people, albeit in a different capacity. Outside of my professional life, family matters most.
