Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Homan.
Hi Michael, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Back in 2006 I was employed as a Regional Manager for a Career Fair Company based in Chicago, IL. The economy was in the beginning stages of a recession and companies had started to slow their hiring and were not exhibiting as much in the Job Fairs we were hosting. Later that year, a friend made me aware of a franchise opportunity with a company called Xtreme Challenge Arena in Thornton, CO. The arena was modeled after the hit TV show called “American Gladiators” and was developed by a former contestant and champion named Kyler Storm. The arena focused primarily on one-on-one and three person competition games and team oriented challenges.
About three years into a 10 year franchising contract, my business partner stepped away to pursue other interests and I started questioning if I had made the right decision. The business itself was doing okay, but I wasn’t sure I could manage everything on my own as I was newly married and was starting a family at the same time. With the support of my wife and church family, we continued to operate at a level I could manage while looking for some quality part-time staff to help run the different Classes, Team Building events, Birthday Parties and Other youth and adult group events that had become popular over the years.
Eight years in to the 10 year contract, a space came available in a building in Broomfield, CO. It was much closer to the area that the majority of my clientele were coming from. A newer TV Show called “American Ninja Warrior” was increasing in popularity and decided that having an arena focussed on Personal Challenges would set it apart from the “Gladiator” arena in Thornton. We called it “Warrior Challenge Arena”.
By the time my 10 year contract was up with the franchise in Thornton, the Broomfield location was doing so well that I decided to close the franchise and focus all my efforts on improving class rosters and running more Corporate and Sports Team Building events at Warrior Challenge Arena.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has not always been easy. Having my business partner leave just three years into the partnership was a hurdle I was not prepared to tackle. However, soon after his leaving I was able to hire a Business Development Manager that was a member at my church. He had some business and sales experience and had also played football at a very high level. Those qualities lent perfectly to building key areas of the business that had been lacking.
The second hurdle we had to overcome was the COVID Pandemic. Fortunately, many of our class members were willing to pay in advance for future classes and we started hosting “Ninja Camps” to keep kids healthy and active while parents were working at home. By the grace of God we were able to scrape by during that three month economic shutdown.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am so proud of how the company has grown over the past 18 years. We now host 30 different “Ninja” classes ranging in age from 3 years to adults with more than 350 kids registered during the peak season.
Our staff is amazing and creative, designing new challenges every month and customizes every Birthday Party and Team Building event to the dynamics and interest of the group.
We are able to manipulate the arena quickly to host various different types of events in the same day.
Pricing:
- Classes starting at as little as $100 per month
- Private Birthday Parties starting at $240 with 10 participants included
- Private Corporate Team Building Events as little as $55 per person
- Field Trips starting at $14 per participant
