Today we’d like to introduce you to Morgan Huston.
Hi Morgan, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was raised by two landscapers who owned and ran their own design/build company, so my brother and I spent our childhood summers being dragged all around town to job sites. The entrepreneurial spirit was strong in our family, and it was a pretty easy decision to join the family business after a brief stint in New York City working in the non-profit world.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Nothing is smooth when you’re running a small business! There are constant challenges and hurdles – the supply chain issues at the moment are monumental, costs are going up everywhere, and we want to make sure we continue to provide the largest selection of outdoor containers and fountains in the region. We are extremely lucky to work with a team that takes this business and our dedication to quality and customer happiness really personally. And we’re constantly on the lookout for changes in what customers need or want, which is the challenge that every single retailer faces.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
We specialize in legacy garden decor and the enhancement of a biophilic lifestyle. Which is just a fancy way to say that we feel strongly that life should be lived outdoors and in communion with the natural world as often as possible. We pay close attention to what we bring into the store in order to help customers create a sanctuary, whether it’s outside with a beautiful fountain and bright containers, or inside with curated indoor containers and healthy indoor plants. Birdsall & Co. has been known for decades in Denver, but I’m proud of the work our family and our team have put into this company since we bought it 10 years ago to transform it into an evolving, elevated, successful business.
We like to say that we sell fancy things, but we’re not fancy people. We strive to have price points to satisfy any budget so that we are accessible to everyone who walks into our stores. We keep the region’s largest inventory of fountains and outdoor containers in stock most of the year and work one-on-one with customers to make sure they choose the best options for their lifestyle and outdoor space.
We also carry a massive selection of hand-picked indoor plants and have people on staff that have exhaustive knowledge about what we sell. Our inventory changes weekly, and our selection runs from tried and true basic houseplants to collector and rare plants. Our goal is to pair everyone up with the perfect plant for their space and their personalities! Plus, we offer thousands of indoor containers and plant your new baby for free!
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
Our industry did extremely well in 2020 and 2021; most people were stuck at home and pivoted to creating a sanctuary in their gardens and living rooms. Birdsall & Co. was no exception to this, for which we were intensely grateful. But on the tail of the first part of the pandemic came some extreme supply chain and worker shortages that have deeply impacted our business. What used to be easy to get and relatively inexpensive is now just simply not available. Our freight costs, both domestically and internationally, have increased 1000% in some cases. Shipping is slow, manufacturing is delayed. So our challenge as retailers is to adjust to these shifting deadlines and availability while keeping the customers happy. It’s a little like the duck gliding on the water, while its legs paddle furiously underneath.
I see the industry continuing to benefit from people spending more time at home and seeing their outdoor space as an extension of their indoor space. Houseplants are certainly here to stay! And the appeal of biophilic design, decor, and lifestyle are inherently attractive to our customers.
