Today we’d like to introduce you to Natalie Hume.
Hi Natalie, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
In 2018 my partner and I were tired of working for unfair bosses….I wanted to start traveling doing fairs and festivals and the only way to do so that appeased both of us was to start our own Caricature business. there birthed Quick Draw Caricatures! in our humble beginnings we started drawing at street markets and one day festivals nationally…we drove all across the country. From there we met and made contacts with some large outdoor amusement businesses; that we still partner with today. From one little ez-up pop up tent to know at this time having 3 large national and international fairs going on at one time with upwards of 20 artists contracting for us.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The road is full of the largest pot holes you’ve ever seen…we drove straight into them and hoped our suspension would hold up. The largest struggle has been maintaining cash flow as we continued to grow so rapidly…we are leveling out now that our route is established and we are happy where our growth is. Another factor that caused road bumps was maintaining positive relationships with contractors unfortunately not everyone is cut out for this line of work and sometimes you have to say goodbye to friends who cant continue the travel life. Also our RV suspension literally gave out when we hit a road bump once…insane tire blow out…it took a semi and a crane to get it off the road lol.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’ve been doing caricatures for 18 years…I love drawing colorful cartoon style caricatures that pop. I’ve grown so much doing it full time year round basically however; being the business owner the first year I was really into forwarding my craft of caricature….then as our business grew so fast I fell off that path and was more business minded. I make it a point to draw at all of my events I’m at as much as possible. I love seeing the return customers year after year. I’m proud that people com seek me out yearly for their caricatures.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I think whats really surprising is that our business is really low profit margin…after our artists get paid I make just about as much as our top selling artist. Its a passion project for sure…I love being able to provide stable work and income for my fellow caricature artists. We strive to provide competitive wages…comfortable housing while traveling and a comfortable work space while at our events.
