Today we’d like to introduce you to Nell Rojas
Hi Nell, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I grew up in Boulder, my dad ran for Nike and won the first BolderBoulder. I was always very proud of him as the BB is like the olympics in boulder. I ran at NAU, graduated and became a professional triathlete, retired in my mid 20’s to make money, ended up running a marathon in 2018 as part of getting back into triathlons, Ironman’s specifically. Ran the olympic A standard that marathon at 2:31, and from there on out I was able to run for Adidas and then Nike. I won the Bolder Boulder in 2019. I have built my run coaching business alongside training and have a group in Boulder and coach remotely as well, everyone from beginners to sub elite runners. I advocate for strength and people of color.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being a professional endurance athlete isn’t easy, to say no to being average is something you have to do every day. Staying healthy is not easy, I haven’t been able to run for the last year due to mold toxicity that I didn’t know about – lost a lot of money not racing, and not have to prove myself again to earn spots at races and appearance fees.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I started coaching runners when I was 17. My dad was a coach and made me coach with him when I graduated high school. I’ve coached ever since then. I love combining the art and science of coaching to individualize everyone’s training plan. I have one practice/week in Boulder and otherwise it’s online. I’m proud of how we promote strong women to achieve their goals. I’d love to create more space for the BIPOC community in the sport of running. I’m best known for advocating for strength training for runners, and strong runners. I come with a lot of coaching experience and racing experience.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
I learned that you just have to move forward like success is inevitable.
