Today we’d like to introduce you to Nezmio.
Hi Nezmio, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started by following my interest of music production/djing at a young age and gradually built on it as time went on through experimenting, failing, learning and remaining consistent. Growing up, I was inspired to pursue music by the video games, Dj Hero 1-2, and the artists featured in them like Deadmau5, Daft Punk, Tiesto, Skrillex and many others. Because I really enjoyed the music showcased in both video games, I began exploring the featured artists discographies and this was where I began to dive deeper into electronic dance music. Before these games I knew nothing of this genre of music. This was also how I got into electronic dance music.
On top of that, I joined an after school club that focused on developing creative skills chosen by the students involved. Music was the chosen topic as it was not hard to decide since the only participates in the club was another student and myself. The instructor introduced us to the basics of using a digital audio workstation (DAW) and how to record our own audio to manipulate.
Over the years, I have taught myself various other skills like, graphic design and 3D animation, to name a few. By learning other skills it has really benefitted with my creation process because it lets me have more creative control over the final outcome and allows to bring my creative visions to life without being and feeling limited. I have gotten to where I am today by a result of trials and errors while finding new ways to improve and adapt over the last decade and consistency. The skills I have picked up along the journey have ended up connecting back into my music and creative work and that has shaped the path I’m on now.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not always been a smooth road truth be told. If anything it’s been all over the place. There have been so many challenges I’ve faced over the years from learning the basics of production, to sound design, to mastering, to personal struggles, and everything in between. One struggle I faced was getting a point in where I felt confidant in my music/sound.
I think it took about 3-4 years after I had started producing to finally say to myself that I’m making “okay” music. It sounded fine but it lacked character and style. I had figured out the fundamentals but had no idea how to make it sound great. It wasn’t until 9-10 years in that I finally felt confidant in the direction of my music/sound. Around the same time, I also locked in the creative direction for Nezmio after going through different rebrands and concepts. Looking back, every struggle I’ve endured has taught me valuable lessons and helped me grow into where I am now today.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I do music production alongside djing, music engineering, mixing and mastering. I primarily create electronic dance music, specifically House, Nu-Disco, Dub & other various EDM sub-genres. I do tend to also wander beyond EDM & have made my way into Hip Hop & Pop while bringing in EDM elements. I specialize in sound design, genre bending and crafting unique worlds through music/visuals for personal listening experiences that can also translate to live settings. What I am most proud of is the journey it’s taken to get to the position I’m in. From teaching myself everything from production to visual design, to finally reaching a sound and identity I fully feel confident in. It’s been a grand expedition.
Personally, what I think sets me apart is that I don’t just stop at music. My range of creative skills like graphic design and 3D animation, allows me to fully build around a project while maintaining the vision from start to finish. This also allows me to bring in my other creative skills to the table when I’m collaborating with other artists, making it easier for us to bring our combined vision to life through not just music but visual designs as well.
Being Mexican American, I have also been drawing inspiration from my culture and developing ways to incorporate it into electronic dance music through musical elements, themes and visuals to create something uniquely different that represents who I am and where I come from. This includes bringing in rhythms and sounds influenced by Latin music such as, Cumbia or Corridos, for example and cultural theming, Dia De Los Muertos alongside other Mexican Folklore. The helmet I wear is based on Dia De Los Muertos, a holiday we gather to pay respects and remember friends and family members who have passed on. The idea of the helmet came from Deadmau5 and Daft Punk but the inspiration for the mask specially came from sugar skulls and sugar skull makeup, a makeup style that is used to create the appearance of the character, La Calavera Catrina, a prominent figure during Dia De Los Muertos celebrations created by Jose Guadalupe Posada around 1910, initially created as a satirical lithograph, to then evolve into a cherished national icon overtime.
At the end of the day, my goal through my music is to create experiences that will make people feel connected, whether it’s through the energy of a live performance, the emotion of a track during a personal or shared experience and/or the cultural elements that bring identity and heritage into my music.
What are your plans for the future?
I have a few plans for the future. The first thing would be to release new music monthly going forward. Hoping to start by this month or next so I can go into 2026 already with 4-5 new releases under my belt. On top of these new music releases, I’m also planning to release music videos and content to go with each release. Shout out to 52 Pix, we are already working and planning together in bringing these music videos to life alongside new and innovative collaborative projects between us both. Can’t say much but we are working closely on some new exciting ideas to be on the lookout for!
From there I am also looking to start performing at shows and/or put together shows between artist friends and myself! On top of that, continue collaborative works with fellow artists and hopefully expand to new artists from all around the world! Lastly, continue to push forward no matter what. I’m barely getting started despite years of being involved in music, I still have so much more to showcase and I’m looking forward to further developing and improving my sound further than it already is.
