Today we’d like to introduce you to Olivia Tati
Hi Olivia, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was a chemical engineer in the oil and gas industry but burnt out HARD. I actually went to grad school at Colorado School of Mines for Engineering and Technology management then moved to New Orleans for work. After a year of working I realised I was in $25K in credit card debt. This was also when I realised I couldn’t stay in this job for the next 30 years, or really even next 5-10 years so I started looking into other ways to pay off my debt and potentially start seeking out a career change. I decided to get my real estate license and sell real estate part-time while working my engineering job. I also discovered real estate investing. I was hooked and realised this would be my way out of my job that was making me depressed. I had gotten so depressed I was prescribed lexapro to get through the day because I didn’t want to wake up and go to work anymore because I just didn’t like it that much. After 8 months, I was able to pay off all of my credit card debt by getting serious about personal finances and within less than a year purchases my first house hack which was a duplex in New Orleans and I did the house hacking method, where I lived in one unit and rented out the other. The rent from the other unit paid the mortgage and all additional expenses as well as my living expenses. At this point I was living for free and cash flowing and realised I didn’t need my job to survive any more and went full in on entrepreneurship and real estate investing and spent the last 2 years nomading ever since I quit. I recently moved back to Colorado, and repeated the process where I bought a house that has a basement and I am house hacking it too. Living in part of it then renting the other part out. I have made it my mission to teach other young women how to reach freedom, and give themselves more optionality through real estate investing. Teaching them how to get that first, second, third properties, stick to their goals, and create a life where they have more options. I truly believe you can do anything you want to in life.
This podcast episode also helps explain how I got started https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/welcome-to-wanderlust-wealth-show/id1736217975?i=1000649370116
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No – after I purchased my first property, the office told me we had to go back into the office (we were working remotely before that). This was a couple of weeks after I purchased that first property. I was starting to feel good doing real estate on the side while working my full time job and even stopped taking lexapro momentarily but return to office destroyed me. I went back into a deep depression and had to get back on medication. And was honestly just a miserable person even on medication. Once I finally quit, I was able to get off them just a couple of months later. Just a reminder that it’s just your environment. It also took me so long to quit because I had it in my mind that I needed $10K a month of cash flow in order to quit my job which was just not true. For my mental health and sanity, I just needed to be able to survive y bare minimum off my real estate, which is what I was able to do. And it gave me the time and space to build other businesses around it and purchase more properties. Also things have definitely gone wrong, it’s real estate and life so things will go wrong, but its so much better than the life I was living before.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I am a real estate investor and I teach young women how to invest in real estate to travel the world. My whole ethos is around lifestyle investing, investing to support the liefestyle you want to live. Not just getting more units for the sake of getting more units, but more of a holistic approach of understanding where you are at now and getting clear on where you want to be in 1, 5, 10, 20 years.
I am most proud of the impact I and the brand have on peoples lives. The number of folks that come to us saying that they were inspired to get their first property, or to quit their job and seek something more meaningful, or to get out of a toxic work environment, or inspiring them to change their lineage is priceless. Seeing people live life on their own terms, travel more, and enjoy these long yet simultaneously short lives we get to live.
In terms of offering, I have a free masterclass (totally 100% free class) on how to get started investing in real estate in 2024 on September 17th at 6pm MST. not sure if this will be coming out before then. If not then I also have a course that goes over the basics on how to get started house hacking too
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
Making late night toast with butter and cheese with my mum. Whenever I couldn’t sleep we would stay up late (this was when I was like 5 or 6) and just make the most yummy little sandwich things. It was quality time with my mum. I think we are so conditioned to go through life and not savour the little things. Life is so incredible when you really stop to soak it in. that’s why I’m so passionate about real estate investing. It gives you the time and space to stop and take it in. Since I’ve quit my job I’ve spent so much more time with my family, I visit my family in the UK every year, I take a trip with my parents every year, I’ve created a couple of 6 figure businesses that I absolutely love, I hike every Thursday and on weekends, and feel like I am making a way bigger impact on the world and on people’s lives that is incredibly aligned with my life’s purpose!
