Meet Patrick Dethlefs of Denver

Today we’d like to introduce you to Patrick Dethlefs

Patrick, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I grew up in Kittredge, Colorado with music always on in the house. My dad played guitar and wrote songs for the fun of it. I eventually was gifted a guitar for my 12th birthday and have been pretty well hooked since then. I went through many interests as far as genre is considered and ended up finding that I wanted to put my focus into writing songs. Which has remained my focus.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Is it ever a smooth road? Sometimes a song will come easy, like I just had to be there with my guitar, pen and paper and it’s almost like I could sing anything and it would work. But that’s a pretty rare occasion. I’ve been lucky to play some great places with people I really admire for which I’m grateful but it’s still a lot of work, it’s hard to following an unconventional path, to not compare yourself to others. I’ve had long periods of time where I didn’t feel like I could write and worried that it would never come back but I just continue to work with that and remind myself to have fun with making music because that’s a big part of why I do it.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a songwriter. I’d call it folk music. I’ll play solo or with a band depending on the gig. I guess I’m most proud of the friends/other musicians I’ve connected with who have helped me along my way.

Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
I play around Denver fairly often. I’ve been releasing music since 2010, my most recent releases include “Some Songs Aren’t that Long” a collection of short songs and “Essential Poems” a duo record written with my friend Paul DeHaven. Go give em a listen!
