Meet Patrick Skyler of Denver, CO

Today we’d like to introduce you to Patrick Skyler

Hi Patrick, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Born in Denver, CO in 1982. Always loved music growing up… mostly listented to hip hop when i was in elementary, middle and high school . I played clarinet and guitar when i as younger but didnt stick with it too long beacuse skateboarding became my main focus when i was younger. Most of the old skate videos I watched influenced what I listened to :Wu tang, heiroglyphics, Redman….When i was 16 my parents got me some belt drive turntables and I started learning to dj and scratch. When i was about 18 I started going to raves and listening to drum and bass and house music. Didnt get exposed to bass music really till 2008 when a friend played a memekast episode featuring Anasia and i was completly blown away by glitch hop. It was too dope…hip hop and electronic music fused together and I was instantly hooked. I wanted to learn how to produce, learn music theory, play piano, and anything else that would help me create fresh tunes.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
its been a grind for sure…I didnt start producing til i quit drinking in 2007. I wasnt able to check off any goals in life til that happened. Im grateful for this and has been the catalyst for everything i’ve done thus far. Covid seemed like a complete restart on my career, I had gained some trackttion getting booked for Sonic BLoom in 2019 but after gigs came back I had to start over from 0 again. I’ve had some other health issues that have made some things difficult. In 2021 i was diagnosed with MS. Im grateful that it was caught quickly and im usually in remision and it doesnt bother me too much unless im exhausted or in the intense heat. Im glad my career has been kind of a slow rise instead of an instant shot upwards… im about that long journey, its created more enjoyment for me and it seems like now shit is finally sttarting to reallly pop off! these last two years have been my most crazy yet! Released a bunch of some of my best music! Got booked for a bunch of amazing festivals and playing in a bunch of places i’ve never been before!

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I work as a live sound engineer, av tech and stagehand. It can differ from setting up bands at mission ballroom to a corporate convention from day to day. I specialize in audio, but still do lots of other things… build led walls, program lights, hang line arrays, etc. I have a bachelors in recording arts from CU Denver. Im most proud of the fact that i’ve inspired others to change their lives. Whether it’s them getting sober, incorporating meditation/breathwork into their lives, using 4 agreements, chasing their own dreams, etc. When someone tells me that i’ve inspired them it’s really a crazy feeling. What sets me apart from others is Im real af i’ve been doing this for a mintue and i truly do this because I love it. it’s a grind but i love this grind and wouldnt change anything. Im also proud of the company i keep around me, my main group of friends ive known since i was 10 or younger. Shoutout CMD. Even most of my music friends I’ve known almost 10 years now. Surround yourself with good people that care about you and will lift you up.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
