Today, we’d like to introduce you to Paul Speier.
Hi Paul, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I was working in a stressful job when my brother introduced me to disc golf about 8 years ago as a way to get out and relax. After a few times out, I really started to believe him when he said it would calm me down. I found myself getting outside, away from the hustle and stress of everyday life, playing more and more over the next several years.
Several other family members and friends started playing with me, and my hobby of disc golf became my new addiction. I was lucky enough to work at another job that allowed me to travel the state, and this let me play different courses and meet new people, and this just fueled my hobby. I always get to meet cool people and tell great stories while we play.
Giving people a frisbee to start their own journey was always fun, too. I got to know the discs and the way they fly, which got me to talk to others about it, and before I knew it, my love for this sport made me want to open a store. So, in July of 2023, I opened The Wizard’s Bag Disc Golf Shop.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I wish this could be my full-time job, but unfortunately, when you’re starting out, it usually takes more than one job to make a dream work. That is what I’m doing.
I run my store when I’m not at my main job and love every second I get to spend at my shop. My drive and love for the sport definitely keep me going. The people I’ve met so far also help to keep me going.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Being a person who just loved the sport of disc golf for several years lets me be just that. I’m not a stuffed shirt businessman.
I just want to talk discs and courses and converse with other people who feel the same way. I’m a left-handed thrower, which always makes for fun conversations because it changes the flight of the disc when it leaves your left hand.
I like customizing my discs so I know they are mine, which leads me to dying discs and selling them in my shop. I’m always learning new dying techniques and getting some cool patterns to show off and let others buy customized discs for themselves.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
In this journey, I would say one success was someone walking into my shop who hadn’t been in before. A buddy told them about my shop.
That’s one of the best feelings. Makes me feel like I’m doing something right so far. My name is getting out there. Moving forward my success in this is just getting more people involved in the game.
