Today we’d like to introduce you to Pete Coventry.
Pete, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started side hustling GIS job while I was working full-time at Boulder County. My boys were 3 and 6 years old and I realized how limited my time is with them. I’d leave for work before the woke in the morning and when I came home, I was tired and my boys were tired as well. I wanted to be self employed so that I could be home with the boys and not miss out on this precious time. I took a leap of faith by quitting my stable fulltime County job and allowing myself 6 months to make self employment work otherwise return to the work force. It’s been 7 years and I’m still going strong!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I have some rough patches along the way. I started very strong during the first 2 years, but then the pandemic hit and most of my client workload diminished due to uncertainty. Fortunately my client workload bounced back. Although I work from my home office and home with my 2 home-schooled boys, I face challenges of us always being in each other’s space. Other challenges happen when I’m up against a client deadline and the boys are needing my help with school work. It’s a difficult challenge, but worth the effort.
As you know, we’re big fans of GIS Solutions, LLC. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I’m a fulltime GIS Consultant with over 21 years of experience in the geospatial field. I specializes in leveraging Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to analyze, interpret, and visualize spatial data that supports strategic decision-making. I design and implement GIS solutions tailored to client needs, integrating data from multiple sources to produce accurate maps, models, and analytical reports.
I have a Master’s Degree in GIS as well as a Graduate Certificate in GIS both from the University of Denver.
I’m the sole member of GIS Solutions, LLC and provide a unique blend of both public and private sector employment. Of this experience, over 10 years have been with the Boulder County Assessor’s Office where I analyze parcel level data. The majority of my clients that need my services need this parcel level expertise.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was often referred to as an “old soul”. I was mature for my age and always loved structure. It was natural that I sought employment where I worked the typical “9-5 Monday thru Friday” jobs. So by becoming self employed, it was ( and still is) a level of uncomforting when monthly income varies as client workloads change.
I’ve always had an open-mind and a sense of adventure. I grew up along the California coast where I surfed and scuba dived frequently.
