Meet Renata Hromadkova

Today we’d like to introduce you to Renata Hromadkova.

Hi Renata, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
We started our company for a cause, using our business as a force for good. Tree Sky was developed by environmental artists Renata Hromadkova and arborist Vit Kohoutek in 2017 in Boulder, Colorado. We are a small, local, family-owned business that would like to inspire others.

Our mission is to make socially and environmentally responsible products of high quality strictly using only locally sourced urban wood from hazardous trees. We would also like to educate the public, use the knowledge about the urban forests to save the old-growth. Tree Sky was born from our desire to create and our passion for the trees. Reflects our deep love for nature and also speaks out of respect for the planet. We claim “every piece of wood matters.” Every branch, twig, and tree base is carefully chosen and hand-processed.

Because we are sourcing material directly from the local tree care companies, mostly Urban Woods LLC, we can choose and save the sections or the tree for art and other functional objects. Often we know the exact location of the tree, which creates even deeper story.

That’s our advantage. Thanks to that approach we are able to up-cycle every section of the tree. We can transform trees from public or residential spaces into fine art furniture as tables, benches, chairs, or stools as well as three-dimensional art pieces, home decor or jewelry, and public art.

We also use branches and smaller sections of the trees for art installations, lights, and decoration. Every completed piece is an elemental transformation, reborn into something dynamic and new, recovering trees vital energy. Our project combines sustainability, material reuse, education, and the critical need for green spaces in the cities. Tree Sky also help to plant baskets and burlap trees for landowners and cities, approximately 500 every year.

It completes the whole process of tree life. Planting the new tree also unifies and completes our vision of the whole cycle of tree life. The artistic vision and creative reuse offer a groundbreaking proposal for sustainable design in consensus with global trends. We would like to create a movement that would highlight the value of wood as a commodity and help to change how we all looking at the wood. We all take wood for granted, but it may change very quickly.

As we say in the Czech Republic, everyone needs the wood from the cradle to the coffin. Using unique processes and respecting natural curves in the character of the wood we allow each work to unfold and become its own entity which will truly enchant the space and fulfill your life with the magic of the trees. We believe in up-cycle locally sourced urban woods in the way, how all we can help.

We believe with every piece made from urban wood we can help to leave the old growth untouched and save indigenous forests. It is our responsibility to inform the public how they can help to stop that bloody business in the jungle, rainforests, and forests around the world.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
From the beginning the creative process with wood is rewarding and a lots of people can associate with that.

One of our main thing which we build on our environmental art is using tree bases and big sections of the trees and manipulation of it is the most challenging part for us as the artists.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I studied business academy in Czech Republic where I am from and have a bachelor degree in economy. I worked in commercial woodworking industry and it was an amazing experience where I learned a lot. And then I worked for interior designer as an assistant and found my passion and life interest in design.

All these previous experiences lead me to what I am doing today.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
For me, as the owner of Tree Sky, success means that we can participate to enrich our surroundings and public space for the community.
Success means that we have a chance to educate public with environmental art and create global environmental movement.
