Today we’d like to introduce you to Rhonda Painter.
Hi Rhonda, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
After losing my job in 2017, I decided it was time to go another track and began sewing custom costumes specializing in Victorian attire. That led me into the world of Steampunk. I began traveling the state selling Steampunk costumes at festivals and faires. I now travel throughout the west and southwestern United States. Since fairs are typically seasonal, I operate a second business making and selling Jams, Jellys and Freeze Dried goodies.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I did substitute teaching to supplement my income during the first five years until my income was enough to support me.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Besides selling Steampunk attire, I also make and sell jewelry. I use a variety of methods and media. My favorite techniques are my broken China and wire weave.
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Sometimes you have to change your methods to meet the current situation. My income was based on festivals, which shut down with the Covid lockdowns. I was suddenly with no income. Instead of sewing ball gowns, I started sewing facemasks. I was making a good income on these until they became readily available and and large box stores or convenience store. And once again I found myself with no income. Fortunately, the schools opened up again and I was able to substitute teach again.
